Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 10 years

It is a herbaceous plant that can cause severe skin and mucosal injuries in dogs. It is primarily found in Agordino, but also in Lamon and Sedico. Potentially widespread throughout all regions of northern Italy, in Veneto it is included in the "list of priority species to eradicate": this is the Mantegazza's Panax (Heracleum Mantegazzianum), a truly imposing herbaceous plant, reaching up to 5 meters in height, with a hollow and robust stem, hairy and with purple spots, leaves up to 1.5 meters long, and that, between June and August, produces umbrellas of white flowers, sometimes up to 50-80 cm in diameter. It is a dangerous plant because contact with it causes inflammation of the skin and mucous membranes when exposed to sunlight (redness, skin rash, sunburns, and blisters, with hyperpigmentation of the burned areas that can persist for months or even years): the sap of the Mantegazza's Panax contains chemical substances (furanocumarines) that cause severe damage, especially to bare and non-pigmented skin, and less severe damage to skin with pigmentation and possibly covered with dense fur, as in the case of the black-headed sheep. At risk, not only are humans but also animals, and in particular, grazing livestock and dogs, which can come into contact with the plant in many ways (even the eyes are at risk) or even ingest parts of it. Since symptoms do not appear immediately but only after 24-48 hours of exposure, it is often difficult to trace the cause: that is why it is important to recognize the plant during a walk or a stop in nature and prevent contact or at least remember that contact has occurred, allowing for a correct diagnosis of visible damage on the skin or mucous membranes. In the Bellunese, nuclei of Mantegazza's Panax are present primarily in Agordino (the first sightings along the watercourses between Cencenighe and Listolade and in the La Stanga area date back over 10 years), in Lamon (thanks to the regional campaign funded by Veneto, 28,000 plants were eradicated last year), and in Sedico, but it is certainly present in Cadore and other areas of the province, thanks to the proximity to the Trentino territories where it is widely spread. If the dog has come into contact with the plant, it is necessary to immediately and thoroughly wash the affected area with water and soap, avoid sun exposure, and then consult a veterinarian, without forgetting to report the presence of the Mantegazza's Panax to the Municipality or Forest Services so they can intervene with eradication.

What life with Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza looks like

Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Associazione Onlus Apaca in Italy.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

Frequently asked

Adopting Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Associazione Onlus Apaca handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Associazione Onlus Apaca will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Associazione Onlus Apaca early rather than rehoming privately; they know Attenzione al Panace di Mantegazza and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (IT). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
