Adopt Bertie

Mixed Breed · Male · Senior · 9 years

Gender: male Birthday: November 2017 Castrated/Neutered: yes Weight: 19,6kg Back story: Bertie once had an owner, but sadly he was neglected and allowed to roam freely. When we found him, his coat was severely matted, he had an ear infection and was suffering from an eye injury. Bertie was taken into our care and admitted to the shelter in November 2025. Description/Updates/Pictures: Update May 2026: Update March 2026: Bertie received lots of inquiries at the beginning, but two months later he’s still with us- and that’s definitely not because of him! This fluffy, handsome boy can never get enough attention and absolutely loves being around people Bertie is already 8 years old, but he’s still full of energy. He weighs just under 20 kg, is healthy, and ready to settle into his forever home. His signature look? His tongue is always slightly sticking out- and it makes him even more irresistible! Give this fluffy sweetheart a chance! Bertie´s first vet visit:

About Bertie

What life with Bertie looks like

Bertie is a senior mixed breed dog waiting at Souda Shelter in Chania.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇷Adopting from Greece

Greek shelters often partner with Northern European rescue groups for placements. Animals are sterilized, vaccinated, and chipped before adoption. Fees vary widely depending on whether the shelter is municipal or NGO-run.

Frequently asked

Adopting Bertie, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Bertie?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Souda Shelter handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Bertie on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Bertie if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Souda Shelter will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Bertie already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Bertie isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Souda Shelter early rather than rehoming privately; they know Bertie and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
