adoption requirements adoption process Now request this animal! adoption requirements adoption process Now request this dog! Captain Kirk is one of our greatest concerns… For four long years, he has lived his life in the public shelter of Bistrita – confined to a mere 2 square meters. Day in and day out, night after night. No adventure, no freedom, no hope. "Under the leadership of Captain Kirk, the starship Enterprise explores foreign planets and galaxies." But reality? He wakes up alone. In his small hut. Confinement. Perhaps every night, he dreams of green meadows, a family, love. Of a home. We wish so much that this dream would finally come true. In 2026, his greatest wish to find a warm place to call home will hopefully come true. He has waited too long for his miracle. But Captain Kirk is an incredibly awesome herding dog – independent, loyal, calm, watchful. People who know this breed know: once you love a herding dog, you want no other. He is not a dog for commands, but for people with patience, experience, and love. When he arrived at the shelter, he wore a much too tight, heavy leather collar. The skin underneath was infected, pus was oozing from his ears. Clear evidence: he had long been on a chain. That is the past – the wounds have healed, the fur has grown back. But the emotional scars? They remain. And yet: Captain Kirk is friendly. He trusts us. He seeks proximity. He goes on the leash. He does not give up. The beautiful, tri-colored male dog with the distinctive white stripe on his face is about 6 years old – in his prime! 60–65 cm shoulder height, around 35 kg. A imposing dog who has remained gentle despite everything. He needs a home with heart and mind: rural, with a fenced-in yard, where he can finally run free. Children and small pets should not live in the household. He gets along with other dogs. He is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, dewormed, and ready for the journey into a new life – with an EU pet passport, after a positive. A foster home would also be a lifeline! Who will finally take our Captain Kirk out of there and give him the freedom he deserves? Who will show him that there is more than 2 square meters of concrete? Many thanks to Karola E.-S., who gave him his name and thus an identity. Many thanks to Tanja W., who supports him with a sponsorship. A big thank you also goes to Christine H., who has taken on a monthly sponsorship for Captain Kirk. As of 01.01.

Kein Abenteuer, keine Freiheit, keine Hoffnung. „Unter der Leitung von Captain Kirk erkundet das Raumschiff Enterprise fremde Planeten und Galaxien.“ Doch die Realität? Er wacht wieder auf. Allein. In seiner kleinen Hütte. Eingesperrt. About Captain Kirk

What life with Captain Kirk looks like

Captain Kirk is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Captain Kirk, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Captain Kirk?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Captain Kirk on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Captain Kirk if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Captain Kirk already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Captain Kirk isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Ein Herz für Streuner e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Captain Kirk and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
