Chocolate &#8211

Mixed Breed · Male

Chocolate is a very special dog, and he is looking for very special people. The two-year-old (as of February 2025) male dog turned up one day on the grounds of a friend of the small animal welfare organization "Las Huellas de Dylan," but since Chocolate is very shy, it was quite an adventure to catch the handsome mixed breed. In the animal shelter, despite the winter cold, Chocolate is now thawing out enough to accept affection, if someone brings a lot of time and waits for the friendly but frightened dog to seek out contact on his own. Chocolate is a Weimaraner-Ridgeback mix, and he has the curious nature of both breeds. However, there is still not much to see of the sovereignty, self-confidence, and bravery of these breeds. But once Chocolate has learned to trust people, he will surely also discover his "inner lion dog." To get there, the young male dog (Ridgebacks are considered late developers – and it could be that the elegant hunting dog is still in the middle of puberty) will need a reliable and experienced home, with a family that is ready to face the challenge of a shy dog and shows him how to discover and conquer the world. Chocolate is shy and needs long warm-up periods to form friendships, but he is not the typical fearful dog that falls into panic or shock when approached. Touch no longer means stress for him exclusively; our sweet beauty is more cautious, wary perhaps of some bad experiences, but definitely willing to forgive – and Chocolate is curious, a trait that can be fostered and used to open doors to a new, happy life for him. We are looking for a quiet home for this not-so-easy-going boy, with people who can give him all the time in the world to understand the great turn his life has taken. Chocolate has the explorer gene and will definitely thaw out if given the chance to do so at his own pace. A quiet, perhaps already a bit older, more sovereign only dog could be helpful, but is absolutely not a must for our unpolished diamond. By the way – although Chocolate is a hunting dog, he can live quite well with cats … So, at least, as long as that is okay for the cats. If you are patient, if your house is not the whole neighborhood's gathering spot for happy celebrations, if you like to just sit on the sofa, read, and wait for a curious nose to cautiously push its way onto your lap and into your hand, if you can celebrate every small step forward and know that you are suited to help a dog like Chocolate start a fun and long dog life, then we are extremely looking forward to hearing from you!

About Chocolate &#8211

What life with Chocolate &#8211 looks like

Chocolate &#8211 is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Chocolate &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Chocolate &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Chocolate &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Chocolate &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Chocolate &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Chocolate &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Chocolate &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
