Nino

German Shepherd · Male · Adult · 4 years

08.10.2025 Nino is a must-see for true German Shepherd enthusiasts and those who appreciate the breed :-). He has been with us at our shelter for far too long, but he embodies everything a German Shepherd brings: loyalty, devotion, joy in shared adventures, and the desire to please and do things right. When we ask our dog walkers about Nino, they all wax poetic. Everyone just loves taking him out into nature. You might wonder why he still waits for a home. Simply put: Nino tends to be watchful and territorial in his own home. He picks a favorite person and defends them – sometimes even against family members. We do not see Nino as a fit for a family with children or a family that often and gladly hosts guests (at least not at the beginning). We place great value on experienced dog owners (preferably German Shepherd enthusiasts) when selecting Nino's adopters, who are committed to working on and taking this behavior seriously from the start. Nino can and wants to learn. However, he can only do this with good guidance, which he must have from the beginning! He is a model student, learns quickly, and loves being praised for his efforts. Nino has earned the right to find his master soon. Nino came to us from a private surrender. He is a successful mix of German Shepherd and something else, with the German Shepherd genes clearly dominant. Nino is a good dog who, however, tends to defend his home against intruders and visitors. This is not a "big issue" with proper training and is manageable! Outdoors, Nino is an enthusiastic walker and hiker who really enjoys being on the go. A quick round around the block is not enough for him. Nino is socially compatible and seeks people who will take the responsibility to make him feel at ease with visitors! This is actually his only challenge.

About Nino

What life with Nino looks like

Nino is a large adult german shepherd dog waiting at Tierheim Mayen in Mayen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nino, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nino?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Mayen handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nino on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nino if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Mayen will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nino already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nino isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Mayen early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nino and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
