Cocco

Maltese · Male

“Malteser-male with a special personality” Gender: male, neutered Date of birth: April 2020 Size: under knee-high In animal shelter since: October 2024 Gets along with dogs: yes Has children in the same household: no Home sought: home with a garden The skeptical, 2020-born Malteser-male dog Cocco is looking for people who are considerate and do not pressure him. Cocco needs time to build trust, to be touched, and to wear a harness. If given this time, he turns out to be very clingy – he will only be attacked if he wants to be. So it can happen on some days that Cocco does not wear the harness even though he was able to do so before. On such days, he cannot be led on a walk. In his last home, a handling situation unfortunately led to a bite incident. Therefore, we are looking for a home with a garden for the little dog with his special personality for “those” days. Outdoors, he is playful and gets along well with other dogs. Being left alone causes him great problems in the animal shelter and will have to be learned step-by-step in his future home. He mostly ignores strangers on the street, but some he may bark at. Here, Cocco must be distracted, as he may sometimes go forward on his own.

About Cocco

What life with Cocco looks like

Cocco is a small adult maltese dog waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Cocco, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Cocco?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Cocco on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Cocco if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Cocco already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Cocco isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Cocco and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
