Derek

Male Β· Young Β· 2 years

I can live with older dog-savvy children who understand I need time to settle in. I need a resident dog to help me settle in and I have never met cats. I would like a secure garden to spend time in. I’ve never been on walks before and will need a gentle introduction. I have never lived in a home so I will need help to learn house training. I am neutered and have had a cherry eye repair. 06-11-26 Derek has come to us from a breeder to find his forever home. He is a very scared boy who is feeling quite overwhelmed at the moment. He hasn't had much socialisation, so he can be worried, particularly when being picked up. However, with a little time and patience, Derek does start to come out of his shell and his little tail will begin to wag. Derek will be looking for a calm and quiet home with adopters who have experience with ex-breeding dogs and understand that he will need time, patience and reassurance to settle in at his own pace. He relies on other dogs for comfort and reassurance, so will need another kind and confident resident dog in his new home to be his friend and help him find his paws. Derek has never lived in a home before, so his new family will need to be kind and understanding as he begins to discover what home life is all about. He will need to learn all about home life and new skills like house training and walking on a lead, so his adopters should be prepared to take things slowly and help him build his confidence. He can live with older, dog-savvy children who are sensible and understand he will need time to settle in. His adopters will need to have experience with ex-breeders to better understand his needs. With a little love, patience and understanding, we think he will start to blossom and let his true personality show. Derek arrived with a cherry eye which has been repaired at the time of his neuter. Derek has a travel document. Derek has been given the Gift of Life by Beth Greenwood Through the generosity of a Gift of Life sponsor, this dog was able to leave behind an uncertain future in Ireland and find safety and care at Many Tears. Every sponsorship helps us rescue and save more dogs in desperate need. If you would like to become part of a rescue story, please consider donating to our Gift of Life fund. This dog can be homed with a resident dog.

About Derek

What life with Derek looks like

Derek is a young adult dog waiting at Many Tears Animal Rescue in United Kingdom.

A young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" β€” quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures β€” to let them settle.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Derek, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Derek?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Many Tears Animal Rescue handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Derek on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Derek if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Many Tears Animal Rescue will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Derek already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Derek isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Many Tears Animal Rescue early rather than rehoming privately; they know Derek and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
