Adopt Elmeri

English Bulldog · Male · 3 years

Elmeri is a big guy who also loves big hugs – this charming companion has over 40 kg of love to share. People are the best thing Elmeri knows, and he doesn't shy away from new acquaintances. When people are around, Elmer's tail wags furiously, his butt wiggles, and the gentleman happily gives kisses to both familiar faces and strangers alike. When going outside, Elmeri lets you put on the harness and leads nicely without resistance and doesn't resist being dressed up either. The boy has plenty of energy, and Elmer has a little tendency to pull on the leash, but with commands, he can be reached very well. Elmeri listens carefully to people, but sometimes impatience and stubbornness are noticeable. Treatment procedures have generally gone smoothly with Elmer. Cleaning the ears and eyes has been done very neatly, but nail trimming still needs to be practiced in the new home. Elmeri is clean inside, and when in HESY, he has had no problems with being alone. He hasn't otherwise barked unnecessarily at sounds. Although Elmeri is the kindest big teddy bear when with people, he has shown a bit of hostility towards male dogs when in HESY. For this reason, it might be safest if Elmeri goes to a family as the only dog. Despite his nice character, Elmeri can sometimes be a bit unruly, so the new home should commit to dog-friendly and positive training because of his size. Elmeri will need lots of positive experiences, gentle guidance, and an appropriate amount of activity and relaxation exercises. Elmer is looking for a home in a quiet town or a sparsely populated area where you can keep a distance from other dogs when needed. We won't rehome Elmer in an apartment. Although Elmeri is incredibly friendly, he may not be the best choice for a family with very young children, as he doesn't always realize his own size and might knock over the youngest members of the family when excited. It would be good to have prior experience with similar breeds in the new home.

About Elmeri

What life with Elmeri looks like

Elmeri is a small adult english bulldog dog waiting at HESY in Helsinki.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Note from the shelter: Needs positive training, socialization with dogs, cannot live in apartments

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Elmeri, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Elmeri?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. HESY handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Elmeri on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Elmeri if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — HESY will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Elmeri already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Elmeri isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with HESY early rather than rehoming privately; they know Elmeri and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
