Erna

Mixed Breed · Unknown

Here comes our handsome Erna! Erna lived two years in a home where it did very well. Due to a sudden change in family circumstances, the family could no longer provide for Erna. Reluctantly, they gave Erna to us at our shelter. As a herding/breed-mixed, Erna feels it is their natural duty to protect their home and, above all, their family. A fenced-in garden that they can guard would be a dream come true for them. Everything new is initially met with suspicion, and the rasetypically, Erna needs some time to warm up to strangers. Erna wishes for a stable and consistent leadership from their human partner. If this is given, they love unconditionally and show it with every fiber of their being. With fellow animals, they are conditionally compatible. They do not need other animals to be happy, but they are always housed with a male dog in the kennel. She clearly prefers male dogs over female dogs. If the conditions in the human-dog team are clear, then Erna is full of fun to have and shows a high will-to-please. Nothing is as important to her as her human, with whom she goes through thick and thin unconditionally and does not want to share with other dogs. After beautiful, eventful walks, she happily jumps into the water and refreshes herself thoroughly. Snuggling and cuddling are at the top of Erna's agenda. Devotedly, she lies on her back and lets herself be comfortably rubbed under the chin. Now we are looking for Erna-experienced people who understand the nature of a herding dog and can give her both a sovereign and consistent leadership as well as a caring, loving, and stable home. Due to Erna's imposing appearance, no children should live in the household. Erna would like to be the single princess in the new home. We are looking for her with an individual or a couple who are ready to continue working with her.

About Erna

What life with Erna looks like

Erna is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Erna, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Erna?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Erna on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Erna if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Erna already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Erna isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Erna and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
