Gus

Border Collie Β· Male Β· Senior Β· 10 years

Gus is looking for a calm and quiet home with loving adopters who can take him on sniffy strolls, who will take the time to help him settle in and give him all the love and attention he deserves. He can live with older secondary school children who understand that he is an older guy, and can play with him nicely and will give him space to rest when he needs. Gus would like all of his adopter’s attention to himself so would like to be the only pet in the home, although he could have polite and calm walking buddies who expect minimal interaction from him. Gus is a clever boy and has some training under his belt, he does a lovely β€œsit”, β€œpaw”, β€œdown” and knows his name. He is a very clever but busy boy and gets distracted easily so could engage in training in short, sweet sessions with the help of a tasty treat. He is looking for a home with a private, secure garden for him to potter about, play and have off lead time in as he will need to be on a lead at all times when out in public. Gus can settle in the home, especially with toys and enrichment to keep him busy, so could be left for up to 6 hours, this would need to be built up slowly once he has had time to settle in. Gus will need to meet his adopters multiple times prior to going home with potential home visits to make sure he is settling in well, he also takes daily medication and will need to take them for the rest of his life so please bear this in mind when applying. Super sweet lad Gus is a 10 and a half year old Collie cross who loves exploring the great outdoors on gentle strolls, taking in all of the sniffs. He is a super friendly lad who is keen to make friends with people when out and about. He loves to play, teddies and rope toys are great, he does an anticipation grin before you throw his toy, which is super funny and only a little creepy looking. He enjoys a gentle fuss on his terms, face and back scratches are his favourite and he will nudge you for more if you stop too soon. He likes his space when having a snooze, he is happy to curl up on the sofa next to you, but would prefer hands off whilst napping. This little guy loves making funny faces and will make a lovely companion for his new family.

About Gus

What life with Gus looks like

Gus is a senior border collie dog waiting at Dogs Trust Canterbury in Chestfield.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Gus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Gus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Canterbury handles screening and the adoption contract directly β€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Gus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Gus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad β€” Dogs Trust Canterbury will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Gus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported β€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Gus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work β€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Canterbury early rather than rehoming privately; they know Gus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect β€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
