Jenny Bean, affectionately known as Bean, is a tan and white female Beagle. She is a lovely-natured girl who has plenty of potential, but she is a very nervous and anxious young Beagle who will need an experienced and patient home. Bean is particularly worried by unfamiliar people, noises and busy environments. Walks can currently be very difficult for her, as she can become frightened by passing people, noises and unexpected events. She can also bark at unfamiliar people and, if she feels overwhelmed and someone continues to approach her, she may bark, lunge or chase towards them. She has never bitten anyone, but her anxiety means that she needs owners who understand canine body language and are confident managing a nervous dog. Bean has had some professional help, including puppy classes and one-to-one training, and she did make some progress as she became more comfortable. She will wear both a collar and harness, although she currently pulls on lead. She is largely housetrained but does not actively tell her owners that she needs to go outside, so a consistent routine is important. She may have an accident indoors if she is not taken out regularly. She is not crate trained and becomes extremely distressed if the crate door is closed, so this should not be attempted without professional guidance. Bean can be left for a few hours although she does bark initially and intermittently while alone and spends much of the time pacing and watching for her owners to return. Ideally, her new home should have someone around for much of the day, particularly while she settles and her confidence is built. Bean has not had much experience off lead and should only be allowed off lead in a very secure environment until a strong bond and reliable recall have been established. She is surprisingly clever and can climb walls and open gates, so her new garden will need to be extremely secure. She can be destructive and is very good at stealing anything she can reach. She will often exchange stolen items for food, but if she is tired or overstimulated she may become possessive and refuse to trade. She has shown resource-guarding behaviour with particularly valuable items such as cows’ ears. Her new owners will need to understand safe resource-guarding management and should never forcibly take items from her. With other dogs, Bean has had limited experience. She can bark and lunge at dogs while on lead but has been able to interact appropriately with individual dogs in calmer circumstances. She lived with her parents and brother until around 17 weeks old and may benefit from living with a calm, confident resident dog who could help her gain confidence, subject to careful introductions. Bean will need an adult ony home. She has not lived with cats and does chase the neighbours’ cats from the garden, so a cat-free home would probably be preferable. At home, Bean is a loving and affectionate girl. Once she trusts you, she enjoys being close to her people and currently sleeps in the bed with her owners. She is clever, inquisitive and has a wonderfully mischievous Beagle personality. She loves food puzzles and finding things, although she is equally happy turning almost anything into a game. She has a particular talent for stealing tissues, papers and anything left within reach and then shredding them! Bean is not an easy young Beagle, but she is a very good-natured and loving girl underneath her worries. With the right person, time, consistency and understanding, we believe she has the potential to become a much more confident and happy companion.
