Joker

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 7 years

“Clever, temperamental water rat” Birthdate: April 2019 In the animal shelter since: March 2023 Gets along with dogs: yes, according to the previous owner Gets along with cats: unknown Children in the same household: no Looking for a home: urban fringe or rural (lived in a house with a garden) The sturdy Joker is initially skeptical around strangers but builds trust quickly and then becomes friendly. According to the previous owner, he is also good with fellow animals – unfortunately, he is so stressed at the animal shelter that dog contacts are not possible. Joker knows the basic commands, travels nicely in the car, is house-trained, and could already spend some time alone in his last home. The going on a loose leash still wants to be practiced by Joker through reward-oriented training. The energy bundle swims willingly, is eager to learn, attentive, and people-oriented. Joker has mild HD but no longer needs pain medication at the moment. If he doesn’t like something, like being attacked (due to pain), he shows it clearly, so there should be no children in Joker’s future home. Additionally, the sturdy gentleman defends resources, so preparedness for appropriate management or training is necessary, as resource-related incidents, including bites, have already occurred with the previous owners when children stumbled onto the dog and sat on his back and tail.

„Freche, temperamentvolle Wasserratte“ Geburtsdatum: April 2019 Im Tierheim seit: März 2023 Mit Hunden verträglich: ja lt.

About Joker

What life with Joker looks like

Joker is a medium-sized adult mixed breed cat waiting at Tierschutz Austria in Vienna.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇦🇹Adopting from Austria

Austrian shelters follow the federal Tierschutzgesetz framework: adopters sign a Schutzvertrag (protection contract) committing to the animal's welfare. Spay/neuter, microchip, and vaccinations are included; fees typically range €150–€350.

Frequently asked

Adopting Joker, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Joker?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Austria handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Joker on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Joker if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Austria will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Joker already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Joker isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Austria early rather than rehoming privately; they know Joker and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
