Kyra

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 9 years

female dog KYRA, born ca. 2017, shoulder height ca. 60 cm, ca. 30.5 kg, dog bed or foster home sought. Kyra is a – likely – German Shepherd mixed-breed female dog who has waited far too long for her luck to change. Since December 2020, she has lived in the animal shelter – that’s almost five years behind bars. Before that, she lived her life tied to a chain and surrounded by trash. But Kyra has preserved her friendly nature and longs for a home where she can finally belong. When she is taken out of the cage, her joy is great: She is initially a bit nervous and excited, jumps joyfully into the arms of her people, and demands cuddles. With a long walk, she calms down, becomes more even-tempered, and shows that she simply needs closeness, movement, and attention – something she has long lacked. She loves treats with great enthusiasm, and she shows clearly how much she wants to be liked. There is still a lot of life and energy in her, but she is not overexcited; she is simply a loving female dog who longs to feel alive again. Kyra is large. And Kyra is not young anymore. Perhaps that’s why she is overlooked. But whoever gives her a chance gets an incredibly loyal, people-oriented, and loving female dog who simply wants to belong. Who will finally give this special soul a loving home – a home where she is not overlooked but seen, appreciated, and loved – as she deserves? We do not place in very urban living situations or with families with small children. Please only submit an adoption request if the adoption can be taken on at the time mentioned in the text and you have already discussed the acceptance of a new family member with your family (and any other involved persons like employers, landlords, or temporary caregivers). The descriptions are based on her behavior in this familiar environment. Additionally, puppies and young dogs are still in the process of developing their personalities. They need time, patience, and loving guidance to adapt to their new environment and to grow into secure dogs.

DE·Show original

About Kyra

What life with Kyra looks like

Kyra is a large senior mixed breed dog waiting at Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) in Germany.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Kyra, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Kyra?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Kyra on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Kyra if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Kyra already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Kyra isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Kreta Hunde (Tierschutz Heraklion) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Kyra and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
