Leprechaun

Spanish Mastiff · Male · Adult · 4 years

Update November 10, 2024 Leprechaun arrived terrified. For many months, he didn't venture out of the small room where his bed is inside the kennel enclosures. If you approached him, he would start trembling, look away, and suffer greatly but couldn't even muster the strength to stand up. Very slowly, with much time, love, and patience, and spending mornings in the office to get used to human company, Leprechaun has shown a slight improvement. But throughout this entire time, he hasn't even gone for a walk with our volunteers. He is so afraid of people that if we are present, he lies down and doesn't move. If we aren't seen, he does walk, runs around a bit, interacts with his kennel companion, but if we appear, he freezes. This is why he urgently needs a home. The animal shelter is a safe place for them but not a place inherently peaceful. A dog so terrified not only needs human companionship that knows how to help and understand him but also silence and peace. I hope someone soon sees beyond his fear, notices him, and gives him a chance to be a normal dog and not just another broken tool.----- My name is LEPRECHAUN and I am part of a group of Mastiffs that lived on a ranch. We are working dogs that the PSOE now wants to exclude from the animal protection law, just like hunting dogs. We were a group of 8 emaciated, scared Mastiffs with skin problems and behavioral issues. As we were left loose in the mountains and were hungry and scared, we gave some scares to the people passing by, but the blame isn't ours. Our owner was the one who didn't take care of us and keep us under watch. Now we live in different animal rescue associations and are trying to lose our fear of humans. When we see a person, we start trembling. We can't help it. Additionally, we are being treated for our skin issues and are being fed well to gain weight because when we were picked up, it was heartbreaking just to look at us. Do you have a moment to come and help me lose my fear? I want to be a happy, trauma-free dog. Will you help? He is already neutered. Leishmania and Ehrlichia tests negative. -15 May 2023 volunteer comment on walking the dogs: Before, he would tremble just from being close, he no longer gets as scared, he lets himself be petted and even eats treats from the hand. He still has a lot of fear, but going to the office for therapy is very good for him, and we are putting the harness on him to help him get used to it.

No podemos evitarlo. ¿Me ayudas?

About Leprechaun

What life with Leprechaun looks like

Leprechaun is a extra-large adult spanish mastiff dog waiting at ALBA Protectora Madrid in Madrid.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇪🇸Adopting from Spain

Spanish protectoras generally include sterilization, all vaccinations, microchip ID, and EU pet passport in the adoption fee (typically €250–€400 for a dog, €100–€180 for a cat). Many maintain partnerships with rescue transport providers across the EU.

Frequently asked

Adopting Leprechaun, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Leprechaun?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. ALBA Protectora Madrid handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Leprechaun on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Leprechaun if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — ALBA Protectora Madrid will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Leprechaun already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Leprechaun isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with ALBA Protectora Madrid early rather than rehoming privately; they know Leprechaun and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (ES). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
