Adopt Lewis

Male

I am Lewis and that is my big brother Max. We are now about two months into our foster family and we have grown immensely; you'd think we were much older! But we are still very young, around three months old. When we first came to our foster parents, we were very quiet and timid, but in the evenings we would run around our cage very energetically, which is why we are named Lewis (Hamilton) and Max (Verstappen). These days we do that less, but that's because we can now spend the day playing outside together! In terms of appearance, we look very similar, but if you look closely, we are quite different. Max is a bit bigger than me and has rounder eyes. His nose is also a bit rounder. But if you look quickly, you might not notice. Our personalities are also different. I am sometimes jealous of my brother who dares everything. He has escaped the cage a few times and just hopped through the living room! I went with him once, which was pretty exciting! When we learned to jump high, we could even climb on the couch, hahaha, the owners were surprised! We also find it very cozy when people sit on the couch, we can run over and around them. But then it's exciting to jump off the couch, while we have a high house in our outdoor shelter where we just jump from. When we are out of our (indoor) cage, we behave ourselves, we only defecate and urinate when we are in our cage. In our foster family, there are two big people and two children. Everyone can pick us up, even the little boy who sometimes does it a bit clumsily, but he also learns quickly. Sometimes I don't want to be picked up, then I just want to chill, I growl a little and can even scratch with my paws in the air, but that doesn't last long, when I smell your hands again and recognize you as my dear caretaker, I want to go with you. Be careful, when we walk back to our cage in your arms and see it, we want to go to it so badly that we want to jump out of your arms! We love being petted and snuggled, but not for too long. Sometimes Max and I pet each other when no one is looking. Max is also very smart, he likes to play hide-and-seek with treats, he solves it very quickly! Sometimes I am a bit sad because he leaves nothing for me. We also love chunks and straw. We find vegetables and fruit a bit tricky, we try them but not everything we find tasty. Our foster family is sad that we are going, but we are ready for our next adventure!

About Lewis

What life with Lewis looks like

Lewis is a adult dog waiting at DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam in Amsterdam.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lewis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lewis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lewis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lewis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lewis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lewis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lewis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
