Mare

Mixed Breed · Female · Young · 1 year

The wonderful Mare from 48145 Münster (NRW) is seeking a loving, gentle, and new home. Mare is female, born in April 2022, and is likely slightly sight-impaired but manages well with it. She is clever, friendly, people-oriented, and active, responds to her name, loves parsley, and adores her large exercise wheel. Originally, she lived with her sisters, came to a foster home after a dispute with the entire group, and moved to me and Frieda in September 2025 after a failed ReVG. Mare is more dominant but sometimes insecure. This is likely due to her limited sight, but she is definitely not blind. Unfortunately, it did not harmonize well with Frieda: although Frieda was subordinate, she became increasingly irritated, and in May, it ended in a bloody fight. Mare controls a lot through scent, and the constant nosing around the most valuable thing did not sit well with Frieda at all. Additionally, she was once attacked by Mare from the upper group after a false alarm, which greatly unsettled Frieda. Therefore, she needs a quiet, confident companion. Before her move, Mare was thoroughly checked by a veterinarian. In early July, she could be examined again by an experienced small animal veterinarian from the AG Kleinsäuger. She has a truly charming nature, but one can now see her loneliness. I would be happy to bring her to her new home or travel up to about 200 km. What is important to me is that she is appropriately socialized and nothing is forced. If after a few weeks it turns out that it does not work, I will of course take her back.

About Mare

What life with Mare looks like

Mare is a large young adult mixed breed horse waiting at Deguhilfe Süd e.V. in Obermichelbach.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mare, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mare?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Deguhilfe Süd e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mare on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mare if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Deguhilfe Süd e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mare already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mare isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Deguhilfe Süd e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mare and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
