Pferd Remus

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 13 years

The stallion Remus, born in 1992, spent 13 years of his life as a vaulting horse at a riding club. After developing arthritis, he was no longer fit for this job! In the "normal case," retired horses would have to take the journey to the slaughterhouse. Fortunately for Remus, it was different: Some engaged members of the riding club fought for Remus to be able to enjoy his life as a pensioner and found a place for him where he could stay permanently. So, on June 11, 2011, Remus came to us at the shelter. It was already an impressive sight when this black giant stepped out of the trailer! Remus' coat gleamed, and he was in good condition. However, Remus was very nervous at first. The loss of his friends obviously troubled him, and everything new was inherently dangerous to him. Without rules, his everyday life was foreign to him. The first two days, Remus stood motionless on the pasture, observing the landscape. When he then discovered our cow dams grazing on the opposite pasture, it completely threw him off. Similarly, a lying water trough on the pasture also unsettled him. Remus was quickly accepted by our small horse herd and learned from them that he could simply be a horse here. His fear eventually almost completely disappeared. Most of the time, his curiosity overcame his insecurity. Remus was very people-oriented, especially enjoying the company of children, who he was particularly gentle with. He loved learning small tricks – of course, he expected the corresponding reward. It was infinitely sad that we had to let Remus go in November 2018. Due to his arthritis, Remus had to be given pain medication by the vet repeatedly. When he could barely stand due to pain, we called the vet again. I somehow knew that this time it wouldn't just be about the pain medication. Remus' eyes signaled that he was tired and didn't want to live anymore. After the vet examined Remus, he advised us urgently to relieve his suffering. Remus was 26 and a half years old. "Dear Remus, before you came to the animal shelter, you didn't have a nice life. You were bullied as a vaulting horse, and your joints suffered greatly from it. At first, you couldn't make sense of your life as a pensioner, as you were used to being commanded around. In Ravelle, you found a best friend who showed you how beautiful a horse life can be. You never fully overcame his death. Sierra was also a faithful companion, and you lost her. Now, you are together again and can gallop over evergreen meadows without pain in the Rainbow Land. Behind you are a very sad Oscar, Picasso, and people who loved you! We will see each other again, I'm sure, someday. Until then, take care, you beautiful boy!"

About Pferd Remus

What life with Pferd Remus looks like

Pferd Remus is a small senior mixed breed horse waiting at Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. in Irmenach.

Adopting a horse is a long-term commitment that almost always requires either land or a boarding stable. The shelter will discuss the horse's training level, vet history, and what kind of work or companionship they're suited for. Expect ongoing costs: feed, farrier, vet, and stabling.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pferd Remus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pferd Remus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pferd Remus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pferd Remus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pferd Remus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most horses on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pferd Remus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pferd Remus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
