Maya

Female · Senior · 12 years

I'm Maya, and I'm excited to introduce myself. Fortunately, I have a lot of support from my foster family. My name is Maya. I am quite shy and find many things scary. I came to DOA because my owner unfortunately became very ill and did not get better. Unfortunately, because I was so afraid, there were no relatives who could take me in. When I arrived at DOA with my bags, they quickly saw that a dog like me needed more attention and I was allowed to move into a foster home. Here I have been staying for a few weeks now and it's getting better! I am slowly learning how to play and go on walks outside. I even found one toy that I really like haha! I don't quite understand what I'm doing myself, but that doesn't matter. I love finding the softest little bed or lying in the middle of the bed. And when you get to know me well, I am crazy about cuddling! I would love to do it all day long.

Hier ben ik dan, ik vind het spannend om mijzelf voor te stellen.. Maar gelukkig krijg ik veel steun van mijn pleeggezin. Mijn naam is Maya.

About Maya

What life with Maya looks like

Maya is a senior dog waiting at DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam in Amsterdam.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Maya, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Maya?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Maya on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Maya if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Maya already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Maya isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Maya and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
