💙 INTRODUCING NERO! 💙 Ever fancied a best friend the size of a donkey? Well, meet Nero! 🐴😂❤️ Nero is a magnificent Great Dane mix, around two years old, and he is one HUGE bundle of love, energy and personality! He’s an absolute character, and once he gets to know you, you’re going to have a friend for life. Nero can be a little unsure when meeting new people, so he’ll need someone who understands that good relationships take time, patience and kindness. Once he knows you, he’s fantastic with our volunteers and absolutely loves getting out and about, exploring and having adventures. 🐾 Now, let’s talk about his size! Nero is strong as a bull on the lead, so he needs an owner with the physical strength and experience to manage him safely. A secure garden is essential, giving this big lad somewhere to stretch his legs and have a good gallop before heading off on his walks. Although Nero copes well passing other dogs when out and about, he needs to be the only dog in the home. We are also looking for a home with children aged 16 and over, simply because of his sheer size and strength. Nero isn’t going to be everyone’s dog, and we need to find the right match for him. But for someone who has the space, strength, patience and understanding he needs, this boy could be the most wonderful companion imaginable. ❤️ He’s big, he’s goofy, he’s full of life, and he’s ready to find his very own person! 🏡 Looking for a best friend with a heart as big as his paws? Nero is waiting! Please follow the link to apply to adopt through Almost Home Animal Rescue NI. 💙🐾

About Nero

What life with Nero looks like

Nero is an extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Almost Home Animal Rescue NI in Belfast.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇮🇪Adopting from Ireland

Irish shelters require a home check (often phone or video) and an adoption contract. Animals are vaccinated, chipped, and registered. Cross-border placements to mainland Europe require the rabies titer test (TRACES system).

Frequently asked

Adopting Nero, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nero?: Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Almost Home Animal Rescue NI handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nero on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nero if I live in another country?: Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Almost Home Animal Rescue NI will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Nero already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?: Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nero isn't the right fit?: Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Almost Home Animal Rescue NI early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nero and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?: TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
