Odysseus

Staffordshire Bull Terrier · Male · Young · 2 years

I am Odysseus. Yes, the Odysseus. Adventurer, explorer... and according to the people here, also a "stray projectile" (sounds like a superhero, so I don't complain). Let me tell you my story. One day I was outside. With my leash still on, neatly, of course! But then there was something exciting. Or a smell. Or a bird. Or all at once. And then I thought... freedom!!! And off I went. Or did I escape from a garden or work myself loose from a leash? Well... that remains a mystery. What I do know! My old owners haven't picked me up anymore. So now I'm here, ready for my next big adventure. What you need to know about me. I have energy. A lot of energy. Let's say, I'm energy. I like to use people as a trampoline. Super convenient, those two legs of yours. I recommend it to everyone. Play? Yes, I like that! Hands? Even better! I've learned that hands are fantastic toys. So when I'm excited, I sometimes grab them pretty firmly. Apparently, people don't like that as much... so I still have to learn that. It's okay, I'm smart. Especially when there are treats involved. Speaking of learning... I haven't always had the kindest guidance. Sometimes I still get scared of things, like an umbrella that suddenly opens. Then I think for a moment: help, what's happening here?! But don't worry: I recover quickly. Because then I just jump onto your lap again to use you as my personal massage chair. It works relaxing. For me, at least. Cuddles? YES! But first, let's run, jump, do silly things, bounce and maybe throw a little chaos. Then I'll stick to you like I'm never leaving. Oh yeah, the ball... THE BALL IS FANTASTIC. Best invention ever. Only... returning it? Well... why would you give away something so beautiful? But I've heard that treats help with that concept. I'm open to negotiations. And a floss rope? Ehm... I get the idea. But if you hold it, I'll just grab your hand too. Maybe it's smart if my new owners leave that thing alone. Just a tip from me. In short: I'm a cheerful, enthusiastic, cuddle-crazy springy who still has a few things to learn... but especially very eager to become someone's best friend. So... do you have strong legs, soft hands and enough treats? Then I'm waiting for you.

Hoi hoi! Of alles tegelijk. Beste uitvinding ooit. Alleen… teruggeven?

About Odysseus

What life with Odysseus looks like

Odysseus is a young adult staffordshire bull terrier dog waiting at DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam in Amsterdam.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Odysseus, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Odysseus?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Odysseus on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Odysseus if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Odysseus already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Odysseus isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with DOA Dierenasiel Amsterdam early rather than rehoming privately; they know Odysseus and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
