Oscar

Dachshund · Male · Senior · 9 years

Meet Oscar! He is a very sweet and affectionate boy. He may be a little timid when he first meets new people but once he gets to know you his loving personality really shines through. This gorgeous boy loves a fuss and absolutely adores cuddles. If there’s a lap available, Oscar will make it his mission to get himself onto it! He loves being close to his people and would happily spend plenty of time snuggled up beside you. Oscar can be a little hesitant when having his harness put on, so he will need someone who is patient and gentle with him while he learns that there is nothing to worry about. He can also be a little nervous when out and about on walks, particularly around loud or unexpected noises, so his new adopter will need to give him time and encouragement to build his confidence in the outside world. Once out walking, Oscar is actually a lovely little walking companion and walks nicely on his lead. With time, patience and positive experiences, his confidence outside will continue to grow. Oscar would suit a loving home where his new family understands that he may need a little time to settle and gain confidence. In return they’ll have a wonderfully affectionate little boy who is sure to reward them with plenty of cuddles, companionship and love. He will need positive, gentle training to help build his confidence. Oscar has socialised well with other dogs whilst in our care, so we feel following a successful meet and greet he could potentially be rehomed with another calm small dog. (must be neutered). As Oscar came into the home as a stray, we have no previous history on him and as he can be a little nervous, we would like any children in the home to be 14+ years.

About Oscar

What life with Oscar looks like

Oscar is a small senior dachshund dog waiting at Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) in Manchester.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Oscar, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Oscar?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Oscar on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Oscar if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Oscar already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Oscar isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Manchester & Cheshire Dogs Home (Manchester) early rather than rehoming privately; they know Oscar and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
