Gail has come to us from a breeder to find her forever home. When she first arrived with us she was a very scared girl who found human interaction extremely overwhelming and would often hide away at the back of her kennel. It was clear that she hadn't had much socialisation before and was in desperate need of love and TLC. Since then Gail has started to come out of her shell and has made really encouraging progress. Although she is still a very nervous girl, once she gets to know you she does start to come out of her shell and will approach you for a gentle sniff and will allow you to gently stroke her, although still finds this very worrying. She will be looking for a calm and quiet, adult only home with adopters who have experience with scared ex-breeding dogs and who will allow her to come out of her shell and settle in at her own pace. Gail is a sensitive little girl and does really struggle with change, so she is likely to go backwards in her new home at first and will need time to adjust to her new surroundings. Gail does rely on other dogs for comfort and reassurance and will be looking for a home where there is just one other kind, confident resident dog to be her friend. Gail doesn't really enjoy sharing her space with more than one dog and can be a little sassy and has shown that she much prefers just having one other dog to make her best friend. She does take a little while to warm up to other dogs, but once she bonds with them she absolutely adores them and finds confidence from them. Gail has learned all about walking on a lead and harness since arriving with us and as long as she has a doggy friend by her side, now even goes for walks with some of our volunteers, which is very brave of her! She has never lived in a home before, so everything will be new to her and her adopters will need to be kind and understanding as she settles in and learns all about home life and new skills like house training. Shortly after Gail's arrival to us, she started showing signs of back pain as well as some weakness and unsteadiness. As she's a dachshund and they can be quite prone to spinal issues, she went for x-rays to be on the safe side. The x-rays showed several mineralised discs in her spine, but did not show any obvious spinal cord compression. She was given pain relief and was put on crate rest, and initially returned to activity with the help of a supportive back brace. Gail has made a good recovery and is currently doing very well. Gail's adopters will need to be aware that should she have any further issues in the future related to this, it would be classed as a pre-existing condition and would not be covered by insurance. Gail is a truly special little girl who has come such a long way since arriving with us. She is still a very scared girl, and although her journey may not be a quick one, with lots of love, patience and TLC, we know it will be incredibly rewarding to watch her grow in confidence and discover just how wonderful life can be. This dog can be homed with a resident dog.
