Pongo

Dalmatian · Male · Puppy · 7 months

Pongo is a lively and charming puppy with plenty of energy to share. He is easily excited and may get a bit overexcited, for example, by hanging on his sleeves. Staying still is challenging for this youngster when there are so many interesting things happening around him! As long as Pongo can calm down, he is extremely kind and gentle by nature. The people-loving Pongo has gotten along well with all kinds of people at HESY and enjoys being petted and cuddled. Although Pongo is basically an open and cheerful type, he sometimes sees monsters in strange places, like people wearing raincoats. This junior has some training to do in terms of home dog skills and manners. Sometimes his ears seem to be just for decoration, and he needs a person by his side who can guide him consistently but gently. The new home must commit to dog-based training and building a balanced daily routine, provide Pongo with enough activity and also focus on relaxation exercises. Pongo is very motivable with food and likes, for example, different kinds of brain games - as long as he can concentrate. Although his ability to concentrate is not perfect yet, he loves all kinds of activities with a human. He could possibly become a great hobby partner if the new family has a little patience. Pongo has allowed HESY to perform the necessary care procedures, but staying still is not one of this lively gentleman's strengths. While at HESY, Pongo has been house trained, as long as he has been able to go outside first thing in the morning. However, there have been a few accidents. Pongo has been left alone at HESY and has been left alone, so it is important that the new home takes this into account and also takes care of any signs of separation anxiety. However, being alone has become easier over time, and after a little crying, Pongo has managed to calm down and go to sleep. Consistent practice of being alone must be continued in the new home. Pongo gets along well with familiar dogs, but he is unlikely to be a dog park dog. He is a bit uncertain, sometimes too familiar, and does not always know how to read another dog's body language. Pongo is suitable for both a single dog and a female dog, as long as the dogs' chemistry is right. However, the potential new dog should be one that can handle Pongo's sometimes hectic personality. A younger girl dog could be a good mentor for Pongo. Pongo is not the best choice for a young family, as this headstrong puppy does not know his own size. He has a lot of energy and tends to jump, so he is likely to knock over small children. Pongo is unlikely to be suitable for a cat household, as he tends to be too pushy towards cats. Previous experience with the breed is an advantage, as Pongo's nature has many typical Dalmatian traits. You will definitely need a sense of humor with this lively youngster.

Muutamia ilopissojakin tosin on sattunut. Kissatalouteenkaan Pongo tuskin sopii, koska tuppaa olemaan liian tungetteleva kissoja kohtaan. Aiempi kokemus rodusta katsotaan eduksi, sillä Pongon luonteessa on paljon dalmatialaisille tyypillisiä piirteitä. Huumorintajua tämän eloisan nuorukaisen kanssa tullaan varmasti tarvitsemaan.

About Pongo

What life with Pongo looks like

Pongo is a large puppy/kitten dalmatian dog waiting at HESY in Helsinki.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇫🇮Adopting from Finland

Finnish shelters require a home visit and an adoption contract. Animals are vetted; the EU pet passport covers cross-border travel within the bloc.

Frequently asked

Adopting Pongo, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Pongo?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. HESY handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Pongo on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Pongo if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — HESY will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Pongo already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Pongo isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with HESY early rather than rehoming privately; they know Pongo and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (FI). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
