Sammy – Hat Interessenten

Mixed Breed · Male

Sammy came to us as a stray a few weeks ago, and we’re just getting to know him properly. In this short time, he has already won over the hearts of all the caregivers. Sammy is exceptionally friendly and open toward people. He’s always cheerful, full of energy, and shows great eagerness to work. He thoroughly enjoys attention from his humans—lovingly submitting to being petted, flopping onto the floor, and offering his belly for rubs. Fortunately, this makes grooming much easier, though it should still be done regularly and consistently. Staying perfectly still isn’t quite his strong suit yet, but since he so clearly enjoys affection, it’s not really stressful for either side. The brave fellow handled his vet visit with flying colors and was also friendly and curious toward the veterinarian. We can’t yet say for certain how he behaves around children, but if adopted into a home with kids, they should be sturdy and old enough in case he occasionally gets overly energetic again. Weighing 35 kg and standing about 50 cm at the withers, this approximately 3-year-old, unneutered male dog Sammy – Hat Interessenten certainly carries some heft. Potential new owners must be fully aware of these physical demands. He already walks fairly well on-leash, but there are situations where he uses his weight to satisfy his curiosity and reach his desired destination. Sammy is a very alert dog who attentively observes his surroundings and reliably alerts his people. From day one in his new home, care must be taken to ensure this doesn’t spiral out of control and that Sammy doesn’t become the sole self-appointed guard dog. Sammy clearly shows prey drive. While he’s increasingly able to walk calmly past cats and is learning to focus better on his human, off-leash freedom isn’t realistic yet—and his future home should not have cats or other small pets. So far, he appears inexperienced and excited during interactions with fellow animals. It seems Sammy hasn’t had regular contact with other dogs and quickly becomes confused when things get dynamic, even if his primary caregiver is present near another dog. This leads to frustration, but it’s absolutely something that can still be improved—it’s not like any master ever fell from the sky! On walks outside, however, Sammy is generally quite relaxed. Joggers, cyclists, cars, and other everyday situations don’t rattle our black beauty, and he’s already very responsive to cues.

DE·Show original

About Sammy – Hat Interessenten

What life with Sammy – Hat Interessenten looks like

Sammy – Hat Interessenten is a extra-large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Lahr in Lahr.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sammy – Hat Interessenten, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sammy – Hat Interessenten?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Lahr handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sammy – Hat Interessenten on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sammy – Hat Interessenten if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Lahr will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Sammy – Hat Interessenten already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sammy – Hat Interessenten isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Lahr early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sammy – Hat Interessenten and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
