Adopt Santos

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 7 months

July 2016 - Finally!!!! Santos was successfully rehomed to Spremberg after fulfilling all requirements set by us and the state of Brandenburg as a category two list dog. We wish Santos that his new owners continue to train him and achieve great successes for both of them, so that living together is really fun... and the cuddle times are guaranteed... ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………. My name is Santos and I have been waiting for a new home since March 2015. This is what my caregivers say about me: Santos is a dog of noble descent, which unfortunately did not protect him from a difficult start in life. We will change that now. Santos came to us because his first temporary shelter took in two messed up guard dogs and thought he could be rehomed well, mistake. Bad luck for Santos, at least his return was not possible. So he found shelter with us for now. Acquired because when you retire and want to start a big trip with a caravan, you want a dog. As a puppy, he was not treated fairly. No limits were set, and the confident male dog became a problem. Normal learning processes, such as prohibiting nipping at hands, jumping on people, polite walking on a leash, nothing was implemented specifically; they were overwhelmed from the beginning. What is given to a sensitive but confident male dog, clearly thinking and without any basic aggression, is too much freedom, allowing him to do his own thing. Complicating matters was a stay in a dog training classes/pension that wanted to quickly teach the disobedient young dog good manners with the Teletakt, which finally taught Santos, who is neither insecure nor shy, to defend himself when the situation becomes too stressful or when someone wanted to correct him, especially with owners who don't really know how to set boundaries with a dog.

Juli 2016 – Endlich!!!!

About Santos

What life with Santos looks like

Santos is a small puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Santos, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Santos?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Santos on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Santos if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Santos already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Santos isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Santos and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
