Smudge

Mixed Breed Cat · Female · Adult · 5 years

Smudge is a sweet girl who came to the centre as her previous owner could no longer keep her. Sadly she has found adjusting to life in a rescue centre quite daunting and overwhelming. The hustle and bustle of a busy cattery has made her quite shy and withdrawn. Smudge has been moved to our isolation unit where it is nice and quiet with not much foot fall, this has suited her and slowly she is starting to come out of her shell. Staff have been slowly building a bond with her and gaining her trust, she now does not hide herself away anymore, she chirps when you go and see her and enjoys a fuss. Smudge still has a sassy and spicy side to her and lets you know when she has had enough. A little hiss and she turns and saunters off to her bed with an almost snobby air to her. Smudge has been through a lot recently and we would love to see her happily settled in a loving new home. Smudge will need adopters who have a spare room they can dedicate to her, her very own safe space until she has settled in fully. She will need a nice quiet home as she does find busy/noisy situations quite overwhelming. Once she has settled and learned to trust again we are positive she will make the most wonderful friend for someone. Smudge will need to be the only pet in an adult only home where she will be kept as a permanent house cat.

About Smudge

What life with Smudge looks like

Smudge is a adult mixed breed cat cat waiting at RSPCA York Home in United Kingdom.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Smudge, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Smudge?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. RSPCA York Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Smudge on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Smudge if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — RSPCA York Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Smudge already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Smudge isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with RSPCA York Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Smudge and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
