Sofia

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 6 years

Sofia, born around 01/2020 and roughly 50 cm tall, is a reserved female dog who has for a long time shared a kennel with the male dog Mats. Both are cautious around people and originally spent most of their time in their protective shelter hut. In August 2026, Sofia and Mats were finally allowed to move into a larger and somewhat better kennel. For Sofia, this change was an important step. During the move, she allowed herself to be touched – without snapping, without defensive behavior, and without aggressive behavior. Of course, this does not mean that she enjoyed the contact, but it clearly shows that physical closeness is fundamentally possible in such a situation. This is important and encouraging information that we can build on! After the move, Sofia also quickly showed that she does like spending time outside her hut. She uses the larger kennel and appears more self-confident than before. The new situation seems to have done her good and has shown her that she can move around even outside her previous safe retreat. This development gives us hope. Sofia shows that there is more within her than her earlier reserve at the shelter might have suggested. She still needs time to build trust with people, but she brings with her the important prerequisite: she is curious and willing to engage with new experiences. For Sofia, we are looking for empathetic and patient people who will give her time and not expect immediate closeness. A calm foster home or an equally calm forever home would be a great opportunity for her to keep opening up and finally discover how wonderful a home of her own can be. A confident first dog could give her additional guidance. Sofia is a dog who was overlooked for a long time and is now finally showing that she is ready to take a step forward. Those who give her this path with calm, understanding, and patience may be excited to see how much more self-confidence and potential lies within her. Sofia is neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready for travel. After a positive pre-adoption check, she will be placed with a protection contract. General note about our dogs: Our dogs in Romania are visited regularly so that we can continually reassess their behavior and development. These personal impressions help us greatly in conveying as accurate a picture as possible of each individual dog. However, we would like to point out that a dog may show itself differently in a new environment – with new people, new routines, and new impressions. This is completely normal and part of any process of change. Many dogs open up even more quickly in a home and show sides that were not visible at the shelter at all. Our assessments are therefore based on current observations, but they are not a guarantee of any particular behavior in a new environment. They are intended to provide guidance and show how the dog presents itself at the shelter – and what potential lies within it. We are convinced that with patience, understanding, and a loving environment, every dog can find its way and continue to develop positively.

About Sofia

What life with Sofia looks like

Sofia is a large adult mixed breed dog waiting at Vierbeiner in Not e.V. in Germany.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Dogs and cats typically leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with an EU pet passport.

Frequently asked

Adopting Sofia, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Sofia?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Vierbeiner in Not e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Sofia on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Sofia if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Vierbeiner in Not e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Sofia already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Sofia isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Vierbeiner in Not e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Sofia and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
