Adopt Speedy

Whippet · Male · Senior · 14 years

Our delicate Whippet, Opi, who is now named Levi, feels very comfortable on his foster home. He lives in a large pack of Whippets, Beagles, Podencos, and Bretons and gets along well with everyone almost all the time. He does not like being crowded and will turn into a small monster if someone tries to get to his food bowl while he’s eating. And that’s pretty much the only thing that can be complained about at home with this magical little guy... He is very people-oriented, cuddly, and his favorite sleeping spot is the foster mom’s bed (which also has extra soft pillows for the fur babies). Walking with him is completely problem-free in a quiet, rural, people-free area and he loves going for walks very much. He also lets himself be dressed without any problems. But if someone meets him, be it a person, a dog, or a bicycle, he is almost impossible to hold and he screams and howls at the top of his lungs. I can’t even imagine what happens to him. It’s hard to believe that the sweet little Opil would ever attack someone if let off the leash. I will not try it and it’s a good thing it’s not necessary either, as he has plenty of dog contact in the pack and lives in a home with a large garden. By now, he has put on some weight and has a great figure, but at 10-11 kg, he is still a rather delicate little guy. Since he suffers from arthritis according to his age, he gets a Librela injection every four weeks, which clearly helps him. So far, it has not been a problem for him to jump onto the sofa or the bed. Since Levi could not be put under anesthesia, he was not neutered but received a castration chip instead. He is simply a sweet guy who tugs at the heartstrings. It makes me happy to see him so peaceful in the cozy pillows. : )

About Speedy

What life with Speedy looks like

Speedy is a large senior whippet dog waiting at Franziskus-Tierheim Hamburg in Hamburg.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Speedy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Speedy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Franziskus-Tierheim Hamburg handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Speedy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Speedy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Franziskus-Tierheim Hamburg will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Speedy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Speedy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Franziskus-Tierheim Hamburg early rather than rehoming privately; they know Speedy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
