Adopt Zed

Mixed Breed · Female · Senior · 10 years

Zed was finally rehomed to his new family in Colditz in January 2016. My name is Zed, I am a surrendered dog who was given up along with another young female puppy due to being overwhelmed, and I have been waiting for a new home since December 2014. This is what my caretakers say about me. Zed is initially shy but warms up quickly. If you get down to his level, he is also cuddly, otherwise he keeps his distance. There is still much work to be done regarding his self-confidence, but we don't see this as a problem. Once you have gained his trust, he is gentle and affectionate. Even in situations where he is afraid, he has shown no aggression so far, and he allows veterinary visits without any problems. At our shelter, he goes on walks with various people and thus gets to know different individuals. He should be introduced carefully but firmly to all kinds of environmental stimuli. Zed gets along with all other animals, and he can be socialized with other animals. Zed is missing an eye, which is still being examined and will be stitched if necessary. We don't know what was done to him, and the previous owners couldn't tell us either; both dogs were taken in like that. All we can say is that he needs a home where it doesn't matter if someone is impressed or not, because it doesn't bother him, and sympathy would be the wrong approach here. Zed is a rough diamond and very popular among our staff, we wish for suitable interested parties soon who will challenge and support Zed and teach him how beautiful life can be… eMail:

About Zed

What life with Zed looks like

Zed is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierheim Schkortitz in Grimma.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Zed, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Zed?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim Schkortitz handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Zed on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Zed if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim Schkortitz will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Zed already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Zed isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim Schkortitz early rather than rehoming privately; they know Zed and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
