Ela tem cerca de 3 quilos, e quando a encontramos em uma das gaiolas do abrigo público de Esparta, quase desmaiávamos. Era o pior canil de todos. Ela foi o primeiro cão que recebemos daí, e enquanto a levávamos para fora, um sorriso apareceu no nosso rosto. E esse sorriso ainda está lá. Cada vez que olhamos para ela, e cada vez que passamos tempo com ela, sorrimos. Mesmo quando estava magra e cheia de sarna, em sua miséria, ela tinha um encanto. A chamamos de Erinaki (de uma música popular grega dos anos 1930). Ela ficou tão pequena por cerca de um mês. Ela só soltava pelagem. E subitamente, depois de um mês e meio, depois de comer bem e receber cuidados suficientes, ela começou a crescer. E a crescer ainda mais. Até se tornar quem ela é hoje. Olhamos para ela hoje e parece que o cachorro magro que conhecemos há meses era algum outro animal. Se não tivéssemos vivido e cuidado dela, e se não tivéssemos visto sua transformação, não a reconheceríamos. Mas de alguma forma estranha, Erinaki parece ter os dois cães, o primeiro e o segundo, dentro dela, e isso é algo que não conseguimos explicar com outras palavras. É preciso conhece-la para entender. É um cão que é corajoso e tímido, é pequeno mas às vezes se sente enorme, é doce e ao mesmo tempo parece mau-humorado. Se ela não tivesse estado tão desnutrida no início da vida, talvez agora fosse duas vezes maior, talvez não. She is barely 3 kilos, and when we found her in one of the cages in the public pound of Sparta , we nearly collapsed. It was the worse kennel of all. She was the first dog we got from there, and as we lifted her to carry her out, a smile appeared on our face. And that smile is still there. Every time we look at her, and every time we spend time with her, we smile. Even when she was thin and full of mange, in her misery, she had a charm. We named her Erinaki (from a popular Greek song of the 1930s) She stayed so small for about a month. She only put out hair. And suddenly, after a month and a half, after eating well and getting enough care, she began to grow. And to grow even bigger. Until she became who she is today. We look at her today and it's as if that skinny dog we knew months ago was some other animal. If we hadn't lived and cared for her, and if we hadn't seen her change, we wouldn't have recognized it. But in some strange way, Erinaki is as if it has both of these dogs, the first and the second, inside her, and this is something that we cannot explain in other words. One has to get to know her to understand it. It is a dog that is both brave and shy, she is small but sometimes she feels huge, she is sweet and at the same time she looks grumpy. If she hadn't been so malnourished at the beginning of her life, maybe now she would be twice the size, maybe not.
