E' appena 3 chili, e quando l'abbiamo trovata in una delle gabbie del canile pubblico di Sparta, quasi crollavamo. Era il peggior canile di tutti. Era il primo cane che prendevamo da lì, e mentre la sollevavamo per portarla via, un sorriso è apparso sul nostro volto. E quel sorriso è ancora lì. Ogni volta che la guardiamo, e ogni volta che trascorriamo tempo con lei, sorridiamo. Anche quando era magra e piena di zecche, nella sua sofferenza, aveva un fascino. Le abbiamo dato il nome Erinaki (da una popolare canzone greca degli anni trenta). È rimasta così piccola per circa un mese. Non faceva che perdere pelo. E improvvisamente, dopo un mese e mezzo, dopo aver mangiato bene e aver ricevuto le cure necessarie, ha iniziato a crescere. E a crescere ancora di più. Finché non è diventata chi è oggi. La guardiamo oggi e sembra che il cane magro che conoscevamo mesi fa fosse un altro animale. Se non avessimo vissuto e curato lei, e se non avessimo visto i suoi cambiamenti, non l'avremmo riconosciuta. Ma in qualche strano modo, Erinaki sembra avere dentro di sé entrambi questi cani, il primo e il secondo, e questo è qualcosa che non possiamo spiegare con altre parole. Bisogna conoscerla per capirlo. È un cane che è sia coraggioso che timido, è piccola ma a volte si sente enorme, è dolce e nello stesso tempo sembra burbero. Se non fosse stata così denutrita all'inizio della sua vita, forse adesso sarebbe due volte più grande, forse no. She is barely 3 kilos, and when we found her in one of the cages in the public pound of Sparta , we nearly collapsed. It was the worse kennel of all. She was the first dog we got from there, and as we lifted her to carry her out, a smile appeared on our face. And that smile is still there. Every time we look at her, and every time we spend time with her, we smile. Even when she was thin and full of mange, in her misery, she had a charm. We named her Erinaki (from a popular Greek song of the 1930s) She stayed so small for about a month. She only put out hair. And suddenly, after a month and a half, after eating well and getting enough care, she began to grow. And to grow even bigger. Until she became who she is today. We look at her today and it's as if that skinny dog we knew months ago was some other animal. If we hadn't lived and cared for her, and if we hadn't seen her change, we wouldn't have recognized it. But in some strange way, Erinaki is as if it has both of these dogs, the first and the second, inside her, and this is something that we cannot explain in other words. One has to get to know her to understand it. It is a dog that is both brave and shy, she is small but sometimes she feels huge, she is sweet and at the same time she looks grumpy. If she hadn't been so malnourished at the beginning of her life, maybe now she would be twice the size, maybe not.
