Barney

Dachshund ยท Male ยท Senior ยท 10 years

Meet lovely Barney our sweet natured, older gentleman Dachshund cross! Barney arrived on site following a change in his previous owner's circumstances. He has a lovely history with his owner describing him as a 'pleasant-natured sociable dog' who would follow them around the house and seek out all the interaction. On site he has enjoyed snuggling up with his known handlers and is generally a friendly little dog. Barney has found the transition from his previous quiet home to our noisy London site quite stressful and has struggled to enjoy time both in kennels and out on walks. Due to this, he is looking to go back to his slower, quieter lifestyle away from the inner city with access to a private garden where he can get used to the sounds of his new environment at his own pace. Barney has not lived with children before. He has been very tolerant of all handling required of him on site but can be a little nervous of this and has also found animated play with handlers quite stressful. As such, if to live with children, Barney is looking to live with sensible teens who will respect his space. Barney happily lived with 2 cats in his previous home and whilst he didn't often seek them out, they could be found snuggling at times. He could happily live with other cats again with slow, supervised introductions. Barney has not previously lived with dogs but has shown friendly behaviours towards them on site. If he was to live with a dog, Barney would be looking for a steady gentle companion, not a playmate. Barney is an older man now and would prefer someone to sniff around with who can respect his space. Barney is a very sweet older man who is now looking for his retirement home where can snuggle up on all the comfy blankets. Due to his nervous nature, owners with previous experience with anxious dogs would be beneficial. If you're looking for a fluffy little shadow to cuddle up with, Barney is your man. If you have already completed our online rehoming form and would like to know more about Barney, you can e-mail our rehoming team on to register your interest.

About Barney

What life with Barney looks like

Barney is a medium-sized senior dachshund dog waiting at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in London.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

๐Ÿ‡ฌ๐Ÿ‡งAdopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Barney, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Barney?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Battersea Dogs & Cats Home handles screening and the adoption contract directly โ€” TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Barney on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Barney if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad โ€” Battersea Dogs & Cats Home will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Transport is usually a separate cost, so ask for the exact figure before you commit.
Is Barney already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported โ€” ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Barney isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work โ€” that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home early rather than rehoming privately; they know Barney and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect โ€” names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
