Coto

Mixed Breed · Male · Adult · 6 years

History/Description In May 2020, Coto was found tied to the gate of our shelter in Spain. Whether he was abandoned there or brought there by finders, we do not know. Coto is not a typical stray dog but rather an independent character. He enjoys the company of other dogs but does not wildly play with them. His caretaker Eric describes him as “Boss” – not in the sense of a domineering leader, but as an independent dog who simply likes to do his own thing. For a long time, Coto would not allow anyone to touch him, but he has made small progress recently. In relaxed moments, he sometimes allows a brief touch. Despite this, he maintains his distance – not out of fear, but because he simply does not have a great need for direct human proximity. While he stays near people and does not run away, cuddling sessions do not rank high on his priority list. Even the weekly walks have not brought him much joy so far. He walks along but clearly shows that he feels most comfortable in the animal shelter. For Coto, we are looking for a home with a garden and at least one other dog that provides him with security. People with experience in dealing with independent dogs or those willing to take the time to work with him would be ideal. Whether he will ever become a proper snuggle dog remains uncertain, but with patience and understanding, he can build trust and find his place in a family. Do you have a heart for Coto? Then feel free to contact us!

About Coto

What life with Coto looks like

Coto is a small adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutz Pur e.V. in Kettershausen.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Coto, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Coto?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutz Pur e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Coto on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Coto if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutz Pur e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Coto already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Coto isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutz Pur e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Coto and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
