Donkor

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 20 years

Donkor is a male beauty with shining black-brown fur, a white spot on his chest, and very large ears. A picture-perfect male dog who likely perceives everything with his senses. Upon closer inspection of his image, one can see his tension, his tucked tail between his hind legs. This says a lot about Donkor’s well-being, which has little to do with his outward grace. Donkor is a dog for an experienced dog person who is familiar with dogs from difficult living conditions, can empathize, and brings a lot of patience and love. Donkor needs a real, lifelong chance to slowly and gently lose or minimize his fears and reticence, to build trust. A real and long-term task for both human and dog that will forge them into a team. His very sad background: His mother, Ronda, was rescued from a euthanasia facility. Initially, it was not known that she had three puppies (Akil, Anubis, and Donkor), who were left behind at the euthanasia facility. When it became known that she had puppies, they were also taken to the animal shelter. In what pitiful, frightened state they were—both mentally and physically—we do not elaborate further. But of course, their sad beginning had grave effects on their development. The three dogs only know the euthanasia facility as a place where puppies have extreme (separation) fear, and the animal shelter. Donkor approaches a person very cautiously, sniffs at them, and then retreats. Allowing proximity to people is still very difficult for him. He is absolutely submissive and sometimes allows being petted. Wearing a harness and leash is now possible, but going for a walk outside the shelter is still not in the cards. Donkor is not accustomed to being led on a leash by a person. The animal shelter is only very conditionally a place to learn social behavior, unless it has a special program for the dogs. There is a lack of a constant primary caregiver, the time, the patience, and the constancy. In the right environment with the right understanding, patient, loving, experienced person, a lot is possible. Dogs learn a lifetime. Donkor will one day thank you for it in his own way. © 2006-2024 by animal welfare association Europa e.V.

DE·Show original

© 2006-2024 by Tierschutzverein Europa e.V. - All rights reserved

About Donkor

What life with Donkor looks like

Donkor is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Donkor, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Donkor?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Donkor on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Donkor if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Donkor already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Donkor isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Donkor and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
