Hund Rio

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 15 years

Rio was born on 01.03.2011 and came to the Tierlebenshof with Zoë on 14.09.2013 from Zenica / Bosnia. There are worlds apart between the photos of Rio in the Bosnian animal shelter and the photos of Rio in his new home at the Tierlebenshof in Irmenach. In Bosnia, he didn't even have a blanket in his enclosure. He lay on an empty paper sack and eked out a sad existence. When Rio stepped out of the transporter onto the Tierlebenshof, it seemed like everything else was blown away. He got a new outlook and ran with his new friend Zoë across the entire yard. Together, they explored their new home at a sprint. When Rio found a tennis ball on the Tierlebenshof, he immediately began an exuberant game. The introduction to the other dogs went completely without a problem. Charly was encouraged by Rio in his typical play-encouraging stance. Apart from playing, snuggling was one of his great passions. He showed no hesitation or fear towards the people he had never met before. The fact that Rio also lacked his right front leg barely affected him. In December 2019, Rio embarked on his last great journey to the Rainbow Land. Rio was severely ill with prostate cancer. There were no healing chances for him. Rio received pain medication and had a few more beautiful weeks. Just a few days later, he was only still tired, barely ate, and eventually stopped eating completely. And even with medication, he still had pain. We kept our promise and let him go with dignity! "Dear Rio, when you and Zoë came to the Tierlebenshof, you really stirred up the pack. You were a whirlwind, always at the gate, always curious, always in the middle. Sometimes, you were a real rascal towards the other dogs. But it was even worse to see you only tired and weak. But we kept our promise to let you go when life became too hard for you, and we held to that! Here on the farm, you didn't manage to become pack leader – despite many efforts. Maybe you will succeed in the Rainbow Land. We will miss you very much! Good luck, my friend, we'll see you again!"

About Hund Rio

What life with Hund Rio looks like

Hund Rio is a medium-sized senior mixed breed dog waiting at Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. in Irmenach.

Senior dogs settle in faster than younger ones. They want a soft bed, predictable meals, and short, sniff-heavy walks rather than runs. Many senior rescues bond deeply within weeks because they understand exactly how good a stable home is. Expect occasional vet visits for joint or dental care.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Hund Rio, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Hund Rio?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Hund Rio on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Hund Rio if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Hund Rio already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Hund Rio isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierlebenshof Hunsrück-Mosel e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Hund Rio and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
