Iris &#8211

Mixed Breed · Female · Puppy · 14 months

Iris is currently 14 months old (as of December 2024) – and has already experienced a great deal of suffering and sorrow. In June, our friends discovered a emaciated mixed-breed female dog in a park, along with a newborn puppy. Iris was extremely afraid of people, so our friends first brought the weakened baby to the animal clinic before successfully trapping Iris with a trap. Unfortunately, the puppy died shortly after in the hands of the sad veterinarians. The brave female dog, however, recovered quickly and became a true beauty whose shining and highly communicative eyes bewitched the volunteers of Arca Sevilla. Every visitor stops to smile at Iris, but so far, no one has decided to give the cheerful and very cuddly princess a home. Whether it’s because of her dark color, or because Iris isn’t a Chihuahua (although she’s not a Mastín or Bernádino either – I find her size absolutely perfect. You don’t trip over the mini-dog all the time, but you’re also not instantly knocked over because the new best friend is in a good mood), … we don’t know. Sometimes it’s just a mystery why the best dogs aren’t noticed, and occasionally we suspect that the universe has something very special planned, that somewhere a match made in heaven is waiting for this ONE four-legged friend. And we wish Iris that she will soon be the soul dog of the one person who might be reading this text right now?! Iris is an Everybody’s Darling at the animal shelter. She captivates not only the volunteers and visitors with her charm, but her four-legged roommates also appreciate the very social dog lady with whom you can play and frolic as well as rest and explore the world. Iris is looking for an active and humorous family that will explain to her how life as a family dog works. Iris wants to learn and explore, to cuddle and be loved, to comfort and warm – and finally to experience what it’s like to have a real home, with a dog bed (which you rarely use because the more comfortable couch is so much more convenient) and her own squeaky ball.

About Iris &#8211

What life with Iris &#8211 looks like

Iris &#8211 is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. in Gernsbach.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Iris &#8211, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Iris &#8211?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Iris &#8211 on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Iris &#8211 if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Iris &#8211 already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Iris &#8211 isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein ARCA e.V. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Iris &#8211 and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
