Lucas

Mixed Breed · Male · Puppy · 6 months

For a detailed explanation, please read Why We Are Cautious About Placing Our Dogs with Families with Young Children. Information: Starting in May 2026, a few of our team members spent a week visiting Elisa's animal shelter in Romania, with which we work closely. Only the dogs we expect to be happy in the Netherlands—and their adopters with the dog—are facilitated by us. Lucas definitely fits this description! This little boy was rescued from a home for addicts along with his brothers and sisters and their mother, Emily. The dogs were not safe there and were not being cared for. We got to know this little family, the pups, and their mother during our visit to Elisa’s animal shelter in May. We work closely with this animal shelter and visit it a few times a year. The mother dog is a medium-sized breed, roughly the size of a Labrador Retriever. We expect this pup to also be around this size, but since the size and genes of the father are unknown, it could be different. Lucas is a pup who, despite growing up in a crowded Romanian animal shelter, is still happy and open in life. How he will develop is hard to predict; however, we can always ask Elisa for an update. The sooner he can leave the animal shelter and be welcomed and guided into a nice home in the Netherlands, the greater the chance that he will adapt relatively easily to his new life as a beloved house dog. Of course, the transition is large, and that means the first period requires a lot of calm, patience, and small steps to ensure he is not overwhelmed by all the new impressions. The video above and the video at the bottom of the page give a good idea of him. Also, the mother dog, Emily, is visible on both.

About Lucas

What life with Lucas looks like

Lucas is a large puppy/kitten mixed breed dog waiting at Straydogs Rescue Nederland in RC Nieuwe Pekela.

Puppies need routine, gentle socialization, and roughly two short outings a day for the first year. The first six months are the formative window — house-training, leash work, and quiet exposure to traffic, other dogs, and unfamiliar people happen now or not at all. Expect early-morning wake-ups and a few months of chewing.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lucas, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lucas?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Straydogs Rescue Nederland handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lucas on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lucas if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Straydogs Rescue Nederland will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lucas already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lucas isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Straydogs Rescue Nederland early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lucas and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
