Mister Monk

Male · Young · 3 years

Dear animal shelter staff, unfortunately, I had to let Mister Monk cross the rainbow bridge on December 18, 2023. He had a rather large liver tumor diagnosed by the vet in September 2023. For a few days now, he hasn't eaten anything. He would eat 1-2 pieces of cooked chicken and a little goat fresh cheese. He seemed hungry, but no matter what I put in front of him, he hardly ate anything. The vet said he was severely emaciated and the big belly was now full of tumors. It was simply time for him to go. He went over the rainbow bridge with his head in my hand, very calmly and relaxed. Mister Monk (and the name fit him perfectly) was the coolest sock I ever had to care for. He more or less ignored the tomcat and the neighborhood dog and never provoked them. He would sit on the sofa with me at the end and watch TV. His "sister," Bibi, he accepted, and occasionally there would be a nose nudge, but not often. Mister Monk did not come to bed. Only in the morning, to remind me (of course, before the alarm) that it was now—exactly now—he was hungry and needed something to eat right away because he would otherwise (of course) starve to death. He could tell a lot of stories, but most of the time, it sounded more like he was yelling at me. "GO FEED ME!" or "Why is the door still closed when I've been standing here for at least 3 seconds?" Otherwise, he was always in my vicinity when I was at home (and with home office, I was at home a lot). When I actually dared to stay overnight at a friend's place, he hardly left my side. Every few minutes, he had to make sure I was still there. The computer was his enemy. I had sat and worked for hours without pausing to pet him. He had the talent to climb over the keyboard and hit the exact keys that would shut down the device...? When I was away for a while on vacation, he quickly accepted "the cat caretaker" Waltraud, who gave him food. She was allowed to pet and stroke him. We will miss him deeply (Bibi is looking for him at the moment) and never forget. Thank you for letting me give Mister Monk a few more beautiful years. Many loving and sad greetings G.G.

About Mister Monk

What life with Mister Monk looks like

Mister Monk is a large young adult cat waiting at Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. in Remagen.

An adult cat usually shows their personality within a week. Give them a quiet room with everything they need (food, water, litter, hiding spot) and let them choose when to explore. Don't force interaction — every cat decides for themselves when a new home counts as home.

Frequently asked

Adopting Mister Monk, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Mister Monk?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Mister Monk on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Mister Monk if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Mister Monk already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most cats on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Mister Monk isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierheim u. Tierschutzverein Kreis Ahrweiler e.V. / Tierheim Remagen. early rather than rehoming privately; they know Mister Monk and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
