Adopt Rupert

Labrador Retriever · Male · Young · 3 years

Rupert is looking for a family who are home most of the time, in a home with loving and active adopters who can take him on sniffy adventures, who will take the time to help him settle in and give him all the love and attention he deserves. He can be wary of strangers so could live with older secondary school children who will be calm and let him approach on his terms, children who will play nicely with him and give him space to rest when he needs. Rupert could live with a calm and established dog who can help him build his confidence, this will be pending successful meets at the centre. Living with a dog is not a necessity, he would be happy with calm and friendly walking buddies. He has some training under his belt, he does a lovely “sit” and he is eager to learn with the help of a tasty treat! He would like a home with a private garden to have a potter around and play in and build his independence. Rupert does worry when left, he would like someone home the majority of the time especially to begin with, any leaving time would need to be built up slowly once he has had time to settle into his new home. Rupert will need to meet his adopters a few times prior to going home so please bear this in mind when applying. Please note that should you be shortlisted, our rehoming process usually takes up to 7 days, and potential adopters would be required to come up to the centre to meet him within 48hrs of being shortlisted. Sweet and playful boy Rupert is a 3 year old Labrador who loves his toys. He will bounce and bound around after a toy if it is thrown for him, although watch out when he brings it back because he sometimes uses your legs to stop. He will happily play on his own too, tossing the toy into the air and catching it, he loves teddies but does tend to defluff them. Once he knows you he likes a fuss, he will sit at your feet and lean his head on you, back and neck scratches are his favourite. This cute and cuddly guy is looking for his new home.

About Rupert

What life with Rupert looks like

Rupert is a young adult labrador retriever dog waiting at Dogs Trust Canterbury in Chestfield.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇬🇧Adopting from United Kingdom

UK shelters work under the Pet Travel Scheme (post-Brexit, the EU pet passport is not valid; a UK Animal Health Certificate is required for travel into the EU). Most UK rescues focus on domestic placements but some work with EU partners.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rupert, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rupert?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Dogs Trust Canterbury handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rupert on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rupert if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Dogs Trust Canterbury will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. UK adopters: post-Brexit travel into the EU requires an Animal Health Certificate. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rupert already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rupert isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Dogs Trust Canterbury early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rupert and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (EN). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
