Adopt Melpo

Quando siamo entrati per la prima volta nello spazio di Melpo per esaminarla con attenzione e prelevarle un campione di sangue, abbiamo avuto delle difficoltà! E il motivo per cui abbiamo lottato è che appena ci ha visti, si è girata sulla schiena, chiedendo un tocco dolce, un po' di contatto. Vedete, era appena arrivata dal rifugio comunale di Krestena, e tutto ciò che avevamo notato inizialmente era un cane calmo e riservato, che sopportava pazientemente ciò che le stava accadendo. Le abbiamo accarezzato la pancia, contato sul suo corpo magro i segni lasciati dall'abbandono e dalla fame, le abbiamo prelevato il sangue e siamo passati al próximo cane. E lei è rimasta indietro, a guardarci con un'occhiata triste e confusa, come se stesse pensando: "Cosa accadrà adesso?" Ciò che è seguito nel periodo successivo è stato semplice: ha mangiato bene, si è riposata, si è rilassata e ha ricevuto le cure veterinarie di cui aveva bisogno. Questo è ciò che Melpo necessitava, almeno all'inizio. Ma è stato sufficiente a cambiare qualcosa dentro di lei. La tristezza nei suoi occhi dei primi giorni si è trasformata in uno sguardo luminoso e sicuro, pieno di curiosità e interesse per tutto e per tutti. Ora la nostra Melpo indossa la sua pettorina, esce in passeggiata con i nostri volontari, uomini e donne di tutte le età, incontra gli altri cani nel rifugio e li saluta senza problemi. Apprezzano il contatto umano, ama sedersi accanto alla persona che la porta in giro e semplicemente osserva tutto, e le piace osservare tutto ciò che la circonda. La tristezza nei suoi occhi non tornerà mai più, perché le abbiamo promesso che troveremo una famiglia, una che aprirà la propria casa a lei, e Melpo resterà lì per sempre.

When we first entered Melpo’s space to examine her carefully and take a blood sample, we had a hard time! And the reason we struggled was that the moment she saw us, she rolled onto her back, asking for a gentle touch, a bit of contact. You see, she had just arrived from the municipal shelter of Krestena, and all we had managed to notice at first was a calm and subdued dog, patiently enduring whatever was happening to her. We stroked her belly, counted on her thin body the marks left by neglect and starvation, took her blood, and moved on to the next dog. And she stayed behind, watching us with a sad and puzzled look, as if she were thinking: “What will happen now?” What followed in the next period was simple: she ate well, rested, relaxed, and received the veterinary care she needed. That’s what Melpo needed, at least in the beginning. But it was enough to change something inside her. The sadness in her eyes from those first days turned into a bright, confident look, full of curiosity and interest in everything and everyone. Now our Melpo wears her harness, goes on walks with our volunteers, men and women of all ages, meets the other dogs at the shelter and greets them without any issues. She enjoys human contact, she loves sitting beside the person who walks her and simply taking it all in, and she likes observing everything around her. The sadness in her eyes will never return, because we’ve promised her that a family will be found, one that will open their home to her, and Melpo will stay there forever.
