Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 16 years

A study by the French university Lyon Saint Étienne, published by The Royal Society, an independent academy of scientific promotion, has shown that puppy dogs—but not adult dogs—are very attentive when we address them with more or less high-pitched vocalizations and simple cooed phrases. Thirty women were asked to record affectionate phrases, first looking at photos of puppy, adult, and senior dogs, and then directly addressing the researchers: by comparing the two contexts, it was seen that the women used a higher-pitched and cooed tone when speaking to the dogs, regardless of their age, and that when speaking to puppies, the voice tone became even more shrill and high-pitched by a full 21% above the norm. The recordings were then played to the guests of a dog shelter, 10 puppies, and 10 adult specimens. Nine puppies reacted to the messages with great enthusiasm, approaching the speakers in a play pose. Adult and senior dogs, on the other hand, remained indifferent. The study suggests, in practice, that dogs appear to us as non-verbal companions, with the consequence that we modify our vocal communication exactly as we do when speaking to small children: this strategy is also used in other contexts where the speaker feels, consciously or unconsciously, that the listener cannot fully dominate the language or has difficulty understanding what is being said, situations that often occur, for example, during interactions with the elderly, or when speaking to a foreigner. The absence in senior dogs of a similar reaction to that of puppies was, however, rather unexpected: in reality, this indifference to the "high-pitched" sounds could be linked to a general reduced tendency of adult dogs to respond to playful signals coming from humans. In particular, in the absence of other communication cues (for example, gestural signals), adult dogs seem to quickly adapt to the expressions of language from strangers (less so if they are family members) and thus become quickly indifferent to their vocal solicitations. From our privileged observatory, we can certainly confirm that a high percentage of volunteers behave exactly like the 30 women in the experiment: the tone of voice is almost always similar to what they use with children, and it doesn't matter if the dog is 2 or 16 years old: vocalizing in this way, for many of our volunteers, is a duty as much as a pleasure!
