Adopt Lācis

Male · Adult · 4 years

The brown and white puppy Lācis was once a Romani dog. Taken as a puppy and living in an apartment until three months old, it was taken out for walks with small children. Afterwards, apparently fearing that people would be scared of the dog, it was kept only indoors... Then, when the dog was over a year old, it was given to a shelter, of course, because having a large, grown dog that isn't taken out can be complicated in an apartment... Lācis has a beautiful appearance - a reddish, fluffy coat, fluffy ears. The dog's character is also beautiful: communicative, kind, trustworthy, loyal - he loves and adores his own, and also protects them. With every stranger, including every potential adopter, he will not become a friend immediately - it will take several visits to feel safe in different situations. Therefore, he is looking for homes where there are people with experience in raising dogs, who are willing to train and care for Lācis. There cannot be young children or teenagers in the family - better not to take the risk. Only responsible and experienced dog owners, and if the living situation is offered in a private house, he will be allowed inside at least at night. By the way, the dog is afraid of thunder and lightning!

About Lācis

What life with Lācis looks like

Lācis is a adult dog waiting at Labās Mājas in Riga.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇱🇻Adopting from Latvia

Frequently asked

Adopting Lācis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lācis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Labās Mājas handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lācis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lācis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Labās Mājas will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lācis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lācis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Labās Mājas early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lācis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (LV). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
