Nikki

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Young · 3 years

Nikki is no longer shy; he has been socialized and is now relaxed and loves people, especially when he runs to the playground with them and spends time there. Generally, he is a quiet, affectionate dog who likes to observe everything. After a short bout of play, he lies down and relaxes. Nikki and his brother appeared one day out of nowhere and were kindly fed by a lady who had pity on the two little fellows. The two stayed in the vicinity of the lady's apartment because they knew that there would always be something to eat there. But eventually, the lady decided that the boys were too big to continue feeding them and thought it was a good idea to bring both of them to the animal shelter Odai. Upon arriving there, which was in February 2023, Nikki and his brother were well taken care of, but in their few months of life, they had not received any vaccinations and were therefore quickly exposed to the illnesses that inevitably exist in a large animal shelter with many dogs. Unfortunately, the Parvovirus did not spare the two puppies either, and both fell ill. Although Nikki and his brother were immediately taken to the emergency room to the intensive care unit, only Nikki managed to overcome this virus, while his brother had to sadly pass away. Nikki was strong enough and after a few days of hard battle against the virus, with care and nourishment from the doctors, he was allowed to leave the animal clinic and return to the shelter. The vaccination schedule could now begin, and Nikki was allowed to move into a pen with smaller puppies at the shelter. Physically, he is now the largest, but among all the puppies, he is still the most shy little fellow. Due to his not-so-great start in life, he still has some fear of people and is not quite sure how to assess them. The caretakers now allow him to be picked up and carried to the playground, but it will likely take some time before he can approach strangers with complete confidence. This will require a lot of patience and positive reinforcement. This animal was abandoned.

About Nikki

What life with Nikki looks like

Nikki is a large young adult mixed breed dog waiting at Tierschutzverein Europa in München.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. A larger dog like this one needs daily off-leash time when possible — a fenced yard or regular access to safe walking trails. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇩🇪Adopting from Germany

German rescues typically require an in-person home visit (Vorkontrolle) or detailed video home check before approving adoption. Animals leave the shelter sterilized, microchipped, and with a valid EU pet passport. Adoption fees usually fall between €250 and €450, covering veterinary preparation.

Frequently asked

Adopting Nikki, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Nikki?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Tierschutzverein Europa handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Nikki on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Nikki if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Tierschutzverein Europa will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Nikki already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Nikki isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Tierschutzverein Europa early rather than rehoming privately; they know Nikki and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (DE). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
