Online newspaper ildolomiti.it published an interview with Luca Pianesi with Bruno Viola, shepherd and president of the Association for the Defense of Zootechnical Heritage from Large Predators (Adgp), created to promote and spread the work of farmers in the field of prevention against large predators: in short, people who have given up on complaints and the very idea of illegality (killing and poisoning) and instead carry out responsible actions to make coexistence with wolves possible. Here are the highlights of the interview. "We cannot say yes to the wolf," says Viola. "I am a shepherd and the wolf remains my enemy, the one that takes away what I live for. However, we can say yes to coexistence, in the sense that living with these predators within certain limits is possible, and I would like all my shepherd and farmer colleagues to understand this, who cry when the wolf kills their animals." Bruno Viola and his colleagues realized that with commitment, passion, guard dogs, and well-built fences, it is possible to fight and beat the wolf without guns and unnecessary killings: "In fact, just informing yourself is enough to know that killings could be more dangerous than anything else if not studied thoroughly, because they destabilize the packs, and then there is something to fear, because without guidance, the individuals risk going their own way, without hierarchies and order." It is clear that Bruno knows the wolf well, he lives in contact with him, "even though he never shows himself to me," he explains. "I know he's there, for example at night, the dogs notice it, the camera traps signal it, but he shows himself to everyone except me because he knows I am the one leading the flock. The wolf is smart, very much so. But we shepherds can beat him, as long as we are prepared and equipped. And this is what I want to make clear. Three years ago, on the top of Vallarsa, more than twenty sheep had been killed. Two years ago, I arrived with herding dogs and well-built fences, without guard dogs, and I lost 11 sheep. Since I have guard dogs, for over a year I haven't had any losses, except one night, on August 30th, when bad weather split the flock, with wind and rain, and I lost a donkey, a sheep, and two lambs. But it was an exceptional event. Working hard and using the correct precautions reduces the risk greatly." Bruno explains that at pasture there is a real pyramid. At the top are the sheep, then the shepherd, then the herding dogs, and finally the guard dogs. "These last ones must be in harmony with all the others: there is no way a Maremmano, for example, does not let the herding dog work and the latter does not respond to my instructions. But at the top of everything are the sheep. Myself and the dogs work for them, and for this reason I would never say long live the wolf. He is still my, our, opponent, but there are many ways to coexist with him, even if they require effort. For guard dogs and electric fences, both mobile and fixed, one just needs to turn to the Provincial Forestry and Wildlife Institute. But then you need to learn to manage and raise the dogs and plant the fences." Guard dogs come directly from the Maremmano Abruzzese shepherd circle, but even though they are breeds accustomed to living among sheep and know how to behave with wolves, they need to be socialized with the flock and raised in full respect of the animal. "This is a fundamental requirement to join the association," explains Bruno. "The dogs must be treated well and be healthy. They also consume a lot of food, and therefore the agreement with Almo Nature (a company that produces food providing free food for the dogs of the association, ndr) is essential because it allows us to save on their nutrition. As for the fences, the posts must be well planted, the wires well stretched, they shouldn't be placed near ramps. The weather conditions and proximity to trees must be taken into account. In short, they require knowledge and attention. As an association, we are ready to help all our shepherd colleagues to explain what we know and have learned over time. The only real certainty is that shooting is not the solution, and those who stop crying, complaining, and asking for answers from Europe or whoever else will not be able to truly protect their animals, which are our most precious possession."

Il quotidiano online ildolomiti.it ha pubblicato un'intervista di Luca Pianesi al pastore Bruno Viola, presidente dell’Associazione per la Difesa del Patrimonio Zootecnico dai Grandi Predatori (Adgp) , nata per valorizzare e divulgare il lavoro svolto dagli allevatori nel campo della prevenzione dai grandi predatori: insomma gente che ha abbandonato le lamentazioni e l'idea stessa di illegalità (uccisioni e avvelenamenti) e mette in campo, invece, azioni responsabili per rendere possibile la convivenza con i lupi. Ecco le parti salienti dell'intervista. ”Noi non possiamo dire sì al lupo – dice Viola – Io sono un pastore e comunque il lupo resta il mio nemico, quello che mi leva ciò per il quale vivo. Però diciamo sì alla convivenza nel senso che convivere con questi predatori entro determinati limiti, si può fare e vorrei che lo capissero tutti i miei colleghi pastori e allevatori che piangono quando il lupo uccide loro degli animali”. Bruno Viola e i suoi colleghi si sono accorti che con impegno, passione, cani da guardiana e recinti ben fatti si può combattere e battere il lupo senza fucili e inutili uccisioni: “Anzi, basta informarsi per sapere che gli abbattimenti rischierebbero di essere più pericolosi che altro se non studiati più che bene, perché si destabilizzano i branchi e allora lì sì c’è da aver paura perché senza guida gli esemplari rischiano di andare ognuno per conto loro, senza gerarchie e ordine”. Si sente che Bruno il lupo lo conosce bene, ci vive a contatto, ”anche se con me non si fa mai vedere – spiega – io so che c’è, per esempio la notte, se ne accorgono i cani, me lo segnalano le fototrappole ma lui si fa vedere da tutti tranne che da me perché sa che sono io quello che guida il gregge. Il lupo è furbo, molto. Ma noi pastori possiamo batterlo, basta essere preparati e attrezzati. Ed è questo che mi preme far capire. Tre anni fa in cima alla Vallarsa erano state abbattute oltre una ventina di pecore. Due anni fa ero arrivato io con i cani da conduzione e i recinti ben fatti, senza cani da guardiana e avevo perso 11 pecore. Da quando ho i cani da guardiana, da oltre 1 anno non ho avuto più perdite se non in una notte, era il 30 agosto scorso, quando il mal tempo ha spaccato il gregge, tra vento e pioggia, e ho perso un asino, una pecora e due agnelli. Ma è stato un evento eccezionale. Lavorando sodo e usando i corretti accorgimenti il rischio si riduce moltissimo”. Bruno spiega che al pascolo c’è una vera e propria piramide. Al vertice ci sono le pecore, poi c’è il pastore, poi i cani da conduzione e infine i cani da guardiana. ”Questi ultimi devono essere in sintonia con tutti gli altri: non esiste che un maremmano, per esempio, non lasci lavorare il cane da conduzione e quest’ultimo non risponda alle mie indicazioni. Ma al vertice di tutto ci sono le pecore. Io e i cani lavoriamo per loro e per questo non mi sogno di dire viva il lupo. E’ comunque il mio, il nostro, avversario ma i modi per conviverci ormai sono tanti anche se richiedono impegno. Per i cani da guardiana e i recinti elettrificati, sia mobili che stabili, basta rivolgersi all’istituto foreste e fauna della Provincia. Ma poi bisogna imparare a gestire e crescere i primi e a piantare i secondi”. I cani da guardiana arrivano direttamente dal circolo del pastore maremmano abruzzese ma, anche se sono linee abituate a vivere tra le pecore e sanno come comportarsi con i lupi, necessitano di abituarsi al gregge e vanno cresciuti nel pieno rispetto dell’animale. ”E’ questo un requisito fondamentale per poter entrare nell’associazione – spiega ancora Bruno – i cani vanno trattati bene e devono essere in salute. Poi consumano un sacco di cibo e per questo l’accordo con Almo Nature ( azienda produttrice di alimenti che fornisce gratuitamente agli allevatori dell'associazione il cibo per i cani , ndr ) è fondamentale perché ci permette di risparmiare sul loro nutrimento. Per quanto riguarda i recinti devono essere ben piantati i paletti, ben tesi i fili, non vanno messi vicino alle rampe. Va tenuto conto delle condizioni atmosferiche, della vicinanza agli alberi. Insomma necessitano di conoscenza e attenzione. Come associazione siamo pronti ad aiutare tutti i nostri colleghi allevatori per spiegargli quello che sappiamo e abbiamo imparato nel tempo. L’unica vera certezza è che sparare non è la soluzione e chi si ferma a piangere, a lamentarsi e a chiedere risposte all’Europa o a chissà chi non riuscirà a difendere davvero i suoi animali che sono il nostro bene più prezioso”.
