Adopt Rufuss

Male · Young · 3 years

Savulaik, a young man specially drove from Riga to the Latgale animal shelter "Otrā māja". At that time it seemed - he really wanted this dog so much that he was willing to travel a long distance. It has been less than three years and the dog is no longer needed. The reason? Moving to a smaller apartment... The dog had apparently been placed with someone, but the very next day Rufuss ran away from the new owner. Contact with this person was no longer possible. The barking dog was found by passersby in the snow and darkness - the dog had squeezed into the darkest corner of an apartment building on Dzirciema street. When learning that Rufuss had arrived at the shelter, the owner initially intended to go after him. However, we stopped him, seeing how terrified, shy, and unsocialized the dog was. From the far corner of the cage, almost trying to squeeze into the wall to become invisible, the pitiful creature looked at us. It was clear the owner would only come out of obligation to look for someone to give the dog to again, not to love and care for him. We offered to officially refuse the dog, and it was done quickly. Volunteers along with a canine expert at "Robin Academy" started a 10-week training program to boost Rufus's self-confidence and socialize him. The dog has changed! Of course, we also recommend the new owners to continue training at home, so that you have a truly smart dog by your side. When going for a walk, Rufuss will gladly show what he likes and what he doesn't. We recommend Rufuss for people with previous experience in raising dogs, without very small children at home who like walks and want to involve the dog in their activities. Rufuss can live both in an apartment and a private house.

Pamatojums? Pārcelšanās uz mazāku dzīvokli… Suni it kā bija izdevies kādam “iekārtot”, taču jau nākamajā dienā Rufuss no jaunā saimnieka pamuka.

About Rufuss

What life with Rufuss looks like

Rufuss is a young adult dog waiting at Labās Mājas in Riga.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇱🇻Adopting from Latvia

The shelter typically completes the animal's vaccinations, microchipping, and pet passport before adoption. Specific fees and process details vary by shelter and country — confirm directly via the contact details in the sidebar.

Frequently asked

Adopting Rufuss, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Rufuss?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Labās Mājas handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Rufuss on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Rufuss if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Labās Mājas will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Rufuss already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Rufuss isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Labās Mājas early rather than rehoming privately; they know Rufuss and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (LV). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
