The earthquake in Turkey and Syria has shocked and taken thousands of lives, once again leaving us stunned by such a devastating disaster. On Monday, February 6, the south-western part of Turkey and northern Syria were hit by two earthquakes measuring 7.7 and 7.6 that have so far caused the death of more than 41,000 people. An enormous disaster that has mobilized rescue teams from all over the world, rushing to save lives buried under the rubble, supported by their canine companions. Operational dog units in Turkey and Syria come from nineteen European Union countries, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain, as well as the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Albania and Montenegro. Along with dozens of other countries, they have sent expert teams assisted by their trained search and rescue dogs, along with equipment, vehicles, humanitarian aid and medical staff. From Italy came the team from the National Civil Protection Service, accompanied by Margo, Cobadog, Drago and Zeus, three Belgian Malinois and a Border Collie trained to search for survivors under the debris. Thanks to them, and the work of the team, it was possible to save two young men aged 23 and 26 in Hatay, near Antioch, one of the cities most affected by the earthquake. In recent days, news has arrived about other heroic dogs: Proteo, a German shepherd member of the Mexican team, lost his life after being trapped under a dangerous structure, while Kopuk, a golden retriever who is part of the Turkish rescuers, continued digging despite the injuries on his paws that required several stitches, contributing to the recovery of at least six people. The whole world, together with its dogs, seems to have mobilized to provide the necessary aid to save lives and face this immense catastrophe. And we are encouraged, in the face of this tragedy, to see how many barriers can be overcome to make way for understanding between people, perhaps urgent and temporary, but deep almost as that which binds them to their four-legged friends.

Il terremoto in Turchia e Siria ha sconvolto e mietuto migliaia di vittime, lasciandoci ancora una volta attoniti di fronte a una calamità tanto devastante. Lunedì 6 febbraio la Turchia sudoccidentale e la Siria del Nord sono state colpite da due scosse di magnitudo 7.7 e 7.6 che ad oggi hanno provocato la morte di più di 41mila persone. Un disastro enorme che ha mosso squadre di soccorso da tutto il mondo, accorse per trarre in salvo vite sepolte e supportate dai loro compagni canini. Le unità cinofile operative in Turchia e Siria provengono da diciannove nazioni dell'Unione Europea, Austria, Bulgaria, Croazia, Cipro, Estonia, Francia, Germania, Grecia, Ungheria, Italia, Malta, Paesi Bassi, Polonia, Portogallo, Repubblica Ceca, Romania, Slovacchia, Slovenia e Spagna, oltre a Regno Unito, Svizzera, Albania e Montenegro. Insieme a decine di altri paesi hanno inviato squadre di esperti coadiuvati dai loro cani addestrati per la ricerca e il soccorso, insieme ad attrezzature, equipaggiamento, veicoli, aiuti umanitari e personale medico. Dall’Italia è giunto il team del Servizio Nazionale della Protezione Civile, accompagnato da Margo, Cobadog, Drago e Zeus, tre pastori belga Malinois e un Border Collie preparati a cercare superstiti sotto le macerie. Grazie a loro, e al lavoro della squadra, è stato possibile salvare due ragazzi di 23 e 26 anni ad Hatay, vicino ad Antiochia, una delle città più colpite dal terremoto. In questi giorni ci sono giunte notizie di altri cani eroici: Proteo, pastore tedesco membro della squadra messicana, ha perso la vita dopo essere rimasto intrappolato sotto una struttura pericolante, mentre Kopuk, golden retriever che fa parte dei soccorritori turchi, ha continuato a scavare nonostante le ferite alle zampe che gli hanno procurato diversi punti di sutura, contribuendo al recupero di almeno sei persone. Tutto il mondo, insieme ai suoi cani, sembra essersi mobilitato per fornire gli aiuti necessari a salvare vite e ad affrontare questa catastrofe immane. E siamo rincuorati, di fronte a questa disgrazia, di vedere quante barriere si possano superare per lasciare spazio all’intesa fra uomini, urgente e momentanea forse, ma profonda quasi quanto quella che li lega ai loro colleghi a quattrozampe.
