Irbis

Male · Young · 1 year

August 4th: Gretstar Irbis, an American Staffordshire Terrier, turned one year old. As shown in the register, four people have been involved in the dog's fate between the time of birth and the anniversary. Initially, we were cautious. However, after getting to know Irbis, we couldn't understand where the aggression was coming from. He was knowledgeable in basic commands. Yes, hormones were raging, he was ready to "take over" everything that moved and didn't move, and, receiving rejection, he could become grumpier, which non-experts could mistake for aggression. But this problem resolves quickly with castration. We had managed to find a home for Irbis - we very much hoped it was the right one. We insisted that a dog trainer be involved while the dog was still in the shelter, as well as work with a specialist immediately after adoption. Everything was observed. Unfortunately, the euphoria that the dog was much better than the shelter and the dog trainer warned, proved to be stronger than caution. By relaxing too quickly, a mistake was made, the result of which was the dog's return to the shelter. Is Irbis still aggressive? Like all representatives of this breed, he has zooaggression against other animals in his genes (fortunately, we don't fully experience it in the shelter). However, when walking him, you always have to remember this, anticipating critical situations several steps ahead. And a mandatory requirement is a dog school - learning to control this aggression so that it doesn't turn against the owner, as well as socialization with other animals. In a home environment where communication is only with their own people, Irbis is a gem - it can be seen that the first or longest owners have worked with the dog and taught it. 4. augustā Amerikāņu Stafordšīras terjeram Gretstar Irbis palika gads. About Irbis

What life with Irbis looks like

Irbis is a young adult dog waiting at Labās Mājas in Riga.

An young adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

Frequently asked

Adopting Irbis, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Irbis?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Labās Mājas handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Irbis on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Irbis if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Labās Mājas will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Irbis already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Irbis isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Labās Mājas early rather than rehoming privately; they know Irbis and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (LV). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
