Adopt Lucy

Mixed Breed · Female · Adult · 7 years

Hi, I'm Lucy, a mixed breed border collie. I lived with my adopters for a long time and things were actually going quite well. ... Until they decided to get divorced. From that moment on, I started to lose my balance and things got increasingly difficult for me. I began to strongly protect my home and especially my mistress. Visitors could no longer just come in, and I had a lot of trouble with the younger, more active son in the house. My adopter didn't know how to handle me anymore. Even going for walks outside was very stressful for me; I was reactive on the leash and easily overexcited. Because of my past, I didn't learn during my crucial socialization period how to deal with all these situations, which made it even harder for me. My dear human then called for help from our shelter. They came to check on me at my home, which was very difficult for me. They also saw that it wasn't safe for anyone if I stayed there. Luckily, they managed to find a spot for me, so now I get the peace and guidance I need. I still find strangers a bit difficult sometimes. I prefer to keep my distance then so I can observe calmly. But once I get to know you and trust you, I'll come to you on my own and I'm a big cuddle bug. I do very well in the group with the other dogs, and I really enjoy the volunteers and interns; they now truly belong in my life.

About Lucy

What life with Lucy looks like

Lucy is a medium-sized adult mixed breed dog waiting at Stichting Het Huis van de Dieren in Netherlands.

An adult dog fits most household rhythms once the first couple of weeks of adjustment pass. Two reasonable walks a day plus play time is usually enough. Plan a "decompression fortnight" — quiet routine, no visitors, no off-leash adventures — to let them settle.

🇳🇱Adopting from Netherlands

Dutch shelters typically require a household assessment and an adoption contract. Animals are routinely sterilized, microchipped, and registered in the national pet database (NDG) before placement.

Frequently asked

Adopting Lucy, answered.

How do I contact the shelter about Lucy?
Use the phone, email, or website link in the sidebar of this page. Stichting Het Huis van de Dieren handles screening and the adoption contract directly — TailHarbor doesn't broker the conversation. When you reach out, mention you saw Lucy on TailHarbor so they know which animal you're asking about.
Can I adopt Lucy if I live in another country?
Yes, in most cases. Rescues across Europe routinely place animals abroad — Stichting Het Huis van de Dieren will tell you what they need (EU pet passport, rabies titer, transport coordination) and whether they handle transport themselves or refer you to a partner. Plan for an extra €100–€350 in transport costs depending on distance.
Is Lucy already vetted, vaccinated, and chipped?
Most dogs on TailHarbor leave their shelter with sterilization, current vaccinations, microchip ID, and an EU pet passport included in the adoption fee. The vet status on this page reflects what the shelter has reported — ask them directly if you need details on specific vaccines, recent bloodwork, or chronic conditions.
What happens if Lucy isn't the right fit?
Every reputable rescue accepts an animal back if the adoption genuinely doesn't work — that's part of the standard contract. Talk it through with Stichting Het Huis van de Dieren early rather than rehoming privately; they know Lucy and can place them more successfully than a second-hand listing can.
Why does the description sometimes read awkwardly?
TailHarbor translates shelter descriptions into English from the source language (NL). Translation is imperfect — names of streets, donors, and shelter-specific terms occasionally slip through unidiomatically. For the cleanest read, click the source link to see the shelter's original page.
