Adopt Cani al traino: sport o duro lavoro

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Puppy · 4 months

The Apaca investigation into the world of canine sports continues with some disciplines that may be unknown to non-experts. Unlike agility dog or obedience, probably fewer people have heard of bikejoring, skijoring, scootering, canicross, dog trekking or sleddog. These are all activities that involve physical exercise together with a dog in tow. The training is carried out by the person together with the animal, engaged in a run produced by various means. Bikejoring uses a mountain bike, on which the handler ventures along trails following the pace of their dog, which trots ahead, attached to the bicycle. Skijoring and scootering are variations of bikejoring, where skis or a specific scooter suitable for the purpose are used instead of a mountain bike. In canicross, the handler runs on foot, secured to the dog through a belt, leash and harness. The slower version of canicross, practiced on mountain trails, is dog trekking. The dog receives specific training that teaches it how to move correctly in front of its owner: for example, pulling a weight appropriate to the situation and the animal's characteristics, but which is still a cumbersome object the dog must learn to carry following the instructor's commands. Once this behavior is learned, the weight will become the owner himself. The dog chosen for this type of handling cannot be too small or a puppy. Indeed, in this case as well, the bond between the two must be harmonious and deep, the management of the collaborative run balanced and respectful, putting the dog's well-being first. Perhaps a separate discussion is needed for sleddog. Today, it has also become a canine sport discipline, but its origins are ancient, dating back to the time when northern populations used sleds pulled by husky teams as the only possible vehicle to cross the vast frozen and snowy territories of their regions. At that time, relying on the dogs' strength was necessary for survival, to reach inhabited areas and ensure the transport of food and medicine. As told by the feat of the famous Balto and his canine and human companions, who in 1925, thanks to a relay of dog sleds, managed to bring the necessary antitoxin to fight diphtheria in a remote Alaskan town otherwise unreachable. A story from the past that can help us remember another, non-competitive aspect of the cooperation between dogs and humans.
