Adopt Mobility dog, uno svago per migliorarsi

Mixed Breed · Unknown · Senior · 22 years

Some months ago, the varied world of canine sports was discussed, focusing especially on competition and the psychophysical preparation of dogs. However, there are also activities that have little to do with races and athletic confrontation, oriented towards a cognitive and movement experience more confined in the private space between the animal and its owner. One of these is certainly mobility dog, a non-competitive discipline that originated in Switzerland in the 1990s, which involves facing a series of obstacles that test the dog's motor and cognitive abilities and the relationship between the dog and its handler. Like many other activities, mobility dog aims to develop mental skills and support the educational process through body movement and its perceptions, engaged in solving various "problems." The difference between mobility dog and sports events, however, is precisely the absence of an athletic spirit in achieving the set goals: the game of mobility dog takes place essentially between the dog and its handler or publicly at gatherings and events that do not involve challenges. Mobility dog arrived in Italy in 2004, thanks to dog behaviorist instructor Luca Spennacchio, who, as he himself recounts on his blog, reinterpreted the discipline in a cognitive and zooanthropological way. Spennacchio, in fact, believes this activity can yield good results in improving the human-canine relationship, with puppies in the growth and exploration phase of the surrounding world and also with all the dogs that end up living in an animal shelter or a dog shelter. This aspect is among the most interesting for those who work closely with traumatized and often "difficult" dogs in shelters and kennels, as mobility dog can become an additional and valuable aid in improving the psychological and physical condition of the residents, increasing their willingness to socialize and cooperate, and at the same time also the chances of finding a family. In this sense, mobility dog becomes an educational tool, capable of strengthening different inclinations and abilities of a dog, and, if carried out regularly and patiently, can produce positive results even in scared, aggressive, elderly, and demotivated dogs often seen behind the bars of a cage. There are many resources that mobility dog can help rekindle in them: dexterity, communication skills, self-control, balance, concentration, self-perception... without forgetting that the goal which no rehabilitative discipline can ever truly abandon is to restore the broken trust of shelter dogs in humans. That is why in spring Apaca intends to install a mobility dog course in one of the exercise areas of the animal shelter: anyone who wishes can contribute to the purchase of equipment by donating even a small amount.
